General Syllabus

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION:

RSPT 2461 Respiratory Care Clinical IV: Four hours credit

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. End-of-Course Outcomes: As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry. 256 clinical hours. Prerequisites: RSPT 1261 and RSPT 2353. Co-requisites: RSPT 2305 and RSPT 2453. Lab Fee.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The second-year students that are already enrolled in the Respiratory Care Program.

4. To introduce the student to the various cardiopulmonary diseases and the role the drugs play in their treatment.

I. Basic Physical Assessment for different type of patients:

After completion of this course of study, the student will be able to add to his/her knowledge by:

* Reviewing existing data in a patient's chart or record while in a special hospital setting.

* Collect and evaluate additional pertinent clinical information concerning the care of the critically ill

patient.

* Emergency medical procedures

II. Equipment Application

After completion of this course of study, the student will be able to add to his/her knowledge and

Usage for selecting, using and troubleshooting and cleaning or disposal of appropriate equipment :

* Monitoring devices for the critical patient

* Medication delivery type devices.

* Ventilators

* BiPAP – CPAP type devices

* Pulmonary Function Testing

* Arterial Blood Gas Analysis

III. Therapeutic Procedure Initiation and Modification:

After completion of this course of study, the student will be able to add to his/her knowledge and

* Cardiopulmonary studies and analysis

* Drug administration for neonatal, pediatric and adult type therapy

* Chest physiotherapy

* Tracheostomy assessment and care

* CPR of the infant / adult

IV. Documentation

After completion of this course of study, the student will be able to add to his/her knowledge and

performance in:

* Medico-legal consideration when charting patient data and/or therapy

* Professional ethical consideration when caring for the patient

IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES –

The methods of instruction used in this course includes but not limited to the following:

Clinical instruction, Hands-on practice-clinical lab, Verbal-group discussions and individual / group performance.

Students are prohibited from carrying and/or using cell phones during clinical hours. During clinical hours, cell phones are to be turned off after signing in and be left in back pack. The cell phone is not to be used as a calculator. See cell phone usage policy.

Records will be turned in to the academic dean at the end of the semester. Do not assume that non-attendance in class will always result in an instructor drop. You must officially drop a class or risk receiving an F. This is official Angelina College Policy. If a student does not show up within the first hour of clinical they will be counted absent for the day and sent home. Student must be present at clinic site for at least five hours. If they have to leave before then they will be counted absent. If they leave after the first five hours, the student is counted tardy for the remainder of their day.

All mandatory competencies must be completed/ turned in by the last day of clinical rotation

for a grade 100.

NOTE: If the student does not meet the requirements of this course of study, an incomplete will be given and he/she will not be able to continue in the Respiratory Care Program.

All late assigned papers will receive a zero (0) as a grade.

Instructor reserves the right to give a “POP” quiz at any time during a clinical day when needed

The “Writing Guidelines for Course Papers” needs to be followed for the Case Study-research paper.
