Welcome to the RSM/Tesoro/Trabuco NJB Chapter!

If you have not, you should have many new and wonderful experiences awaiting you. Regardless, we want the opportunity to make your coaching with RSM NJB a great experience.
Basketball is a simple game: It's the coaches that tend to make it complex. We are teachers of basketball. The basketball court is an extension of the young player's life. The court is the classroom. Make basketball fun for your players while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. The records will take care of themselves.

The chapter will pay all fingerprinting fees. Sports Performance Academy is located at 22552 Empresa in RSM. You do not need to pay at SPA as they will bill the chapter directly.

* Communicate effectively with parents through telephone or email regarding practices, games and other aspects of the program.

* Teach each player fundamentals of the sport meeting them at their current skill level.

* Put the players in a position to succeed to grow individually and for the team.

*Develop and maintain a positive rapport with the parents of your player.

*Organize, conduct, and supervise all practices and games

*Secure a team parent.

*Assist in the prevention and care in injuries.

* Emphasize teaching the players the game and to play as a team.

NJB vs. RSM/TESORO/TRABUCO NJB

NJB:

The National Junior Basketball League (NJB) is a non-profit organization. Over twenty years ago, Dennis Murphy, Jr., a former coach at Garden Grove High School, formed NJB. Coach Murphy had a vision of young boys and girls, from first through the twelfth grades, and their families being involved in organized youth basketball.

The program is designed to develop basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and team competition. Also, player participation, team practices, and clinics emphasizing basic basketball fundamentals create a true learning experience for every participant.

The headquarters for the National Junior Basketball League is located in Anaheim, California. Dennis Murphy, Jr. is still the President of the league.

We refer to the National Junior Basketball League and its headquarters in Anaheim as Headquarters (HQ). Programs which are operated by HQ are All-Stars, NJB Stars, All-Net Team League, All-Net Development League, Youth Team League, Youth Development League, High School Team League, High School Development League and various All-Net tournaments.

NJB has Chapters operating primarily in California, but also in Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Missouri, Texas, New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington and Florida.

RSM NJB:

RSM/Tesoro/Trabuco NJB (or RSM NJB) is an incorporated non-profit organization. The RSM NJB Chapter has been operating for 10 seasons. RSM NJB is sanctioned by HQ to operate as an NJB chapter. At this time, the RSM NJB chapter operates a winter season and in 2007 began its first summer season. RSM NJB is now accepting the players that formally played in Trabuco NJB. Our games are played at Tesoro, Santa Margarita Catholic and Trabuco Hills High Schools. The All-Star teams and All-Net teams are under the jurisdiction of the RSM NJB Chapter even though the programs they participate are run by NJB HQ.

Games are scheduled at 1 hour and 15 minute increments. We try to rotate the schedules each week so that one week you have a morning game and the next week you have an afternoon game. Scores are posted each Sunday night by the gym supervisor.

Changing game schedules for any reason will be allowed only upon the following conditions: 1. Each coach agrees to mutually change the schedule. 2. The league can accommodate the change with gym time, refs and score keepers. 3. The Division Representative approves the change.

SCOREKEEPERS/TIMEKEEPERS

The scorekeepers and timekeepers are hired, trained and paid for by our chapter. We expect them to be given the same level of respect you will pay the referees or the opposing coaches. Coaches are not allowed to talk to a scorekeeper about the score. If you have a question or problem about the score, please get the attention of the referee and talk to him/her about it. Please control your parents. It is the responsibility of the coach for the parents of each team. Referees will remove parents from the gym who are not setting a proper example or being a negative distraction to the game. See parent code of conduct. COMMUNICATION TOOLS

Communication is critical to the success of your season. Every year we hear many parents complaining about their coaches not telling them when and where they need to be for practices and games.

There are three tools to help you in this regard:

THE WEBSITE: You can log into your team module and put information on the home page for your team. Parents can then access this information by simply clicking on the Teams tab at the top of the website and they will have instant access to anything you have posted.

EMAIL: Through your team module on the website you can group email your players at any time.

Please take communication with your parents very seriously! Parents will be much more at ease when they are informed. Happy parents makes for happy coaching!!!

Safety:

Each coach will be provided with a first aid kit and a supply of ice packs. You should carry this with you to all practices and games. Additionally, on game days, each facility will be equipped with a first aid kit and ice packs.

Medical Releases:

Each coach should print copies of the medical release forms for each player and keep them with them at all practices and games. Division representatives will be doing spot checks at the games to ensure that you have them.

Medical Issues with Individual Players:

During your parent meeting make sure to ask and note if any players have special needs for medication, allergies, inhalers or physical limitations…You are not authorized as a coach to administer medication unless an emergency, the parent has that responsibility and must be present during all practices and games in the event of an emergency to administer the appropriate care to their child.

GYM RULES

Gym Supervisors:

Each gym will be staffed with a gym supervisor who is a paid employee of our chapter. Gym supervisors will wear an RSM NJB Staff shirt and where a gym supervisor badge.

It is the gym supervisor’s duty to patrol the gym and make sure that all safety issues and technical problems are dealt with. It is NOT the gym supervisor’s job to be involved in disputes over game rules. The Rules Book will be at the scorer’s table for each game. Any interpretations or disputes over the rules MUST be handled by the coaches and referees.

Gym Rules:

We will require all parents to sign a letter that they have been informed of and will abide by the following rules:

Rules at Santa Margarita Catholic High School:

1. No gum in the gym

2. No food inside the gym

3. No outside chairs will be allowed in the gym

4. Parking will be allowed in the back parking lot only

5. All trash must be placed in the trash cans.

NOTE: The entire campus is under 24 hour camera surveillance!

Rules for Tesoro and Trabuco Hills High Schools:

  1. No climbing on the bleachers when they are not down.
  2. No playing on the rolled up mats in the auxiliary gym.
  3. Each team is responsible for removing empty water and drink bottles after their game.

WE MUST RESPECT OUR GYMNASIUMS AS IT IS A PRIVELAGE FOR US TO BE ABLE TO USE SUCH NICE FACILITIES FOR OUR CHILDREN. NOT ABIDING BY THESE RULES CAN RESULT IN US NOW LONGER BEING ALLOWED TO USE THE FACILITIES!

Parent Sportsmanship Game Plan
(10 Things Kids Say They Don't Want Their Parents to Do)

1. Don't yell out instructions. During the game I'm trying to concentrate on what the coach says and working on what I've been practicing. It's easier for me to do my best if you save instructions and reminders for practice or just before the game.
2. Don't put down the officials. This embarrasses me and I sometimes wonder whether the official is going to be tougher on me because my parents yell.
3. Don't yell at me in public. It will just make things worse because I'll be upset, embarrassed, or worried that you're going to yell at me the next time I do something "wrong."
4. Don't yell at the coach. When you yell about who gets to play what position, it just stirs things up and takes away from the fun.
5. Don't put down my teammates. Don't make put-down remarks about any of my teammates who make mistakes. It takes away from our team spirit.
6. Don't put down the other team. When you do this you're not giving us a very good example of sportsmanship so we get mixed messages about being "good sports."
7. Don't lose your cool. I love to see you excited about the game, but there's no reason to get so upset that you lose your temper! It's our game and all the attention is supposed to be on us.
8. Don't lecture me about mistakes after the game. Those rides home in the car after the game are not a good time for lectures about how I messed up -- I already feel bad. We can talk later, but please stay calm, and don't forget to mention things I did well during game!
9. Don't forget how to laugh and have fun. Sometimes it's hard for me to relax and have fun during the game when I look over and see you so tense and worried.
10. Don't forget that it's just a game! Odds are I'm not going to make a career out of playing sports. I know I may get upset if we lose, but I also know that I'm usually feeling better after we go get a pizza. I need to be reminded sometimes that it's just a game.
There's nothing like the thrill, excitement, and challenge of basketball. Let's make sure, as parents, we keep all the attention on the court, and not in the stands.
Darrell J. Burnett, Ph.D
