ROYAL AIR FORCE INTER-STATION SWIMMING, WATER POLO, DIVING AND INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 14-15 NOV 13

1.  The RAFSA Inter-Station Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Championships were held at RAF Cranwell on 14-16 Nov 13. This year’s competition saw an increase in numbers, it was supported by 9 stations competing in the diving, 14 swimming teams, and 6 water polo teams. The competition standard was, as always, high, with new records set for the following 7 events; RAF 100m Backstroke, RAFW 50m Butterfly, RAFW 50m Breaststroke, RAFW 100m Breaststroke, RAFW 100m Butterfly, RAF Medley Relay and RAFW Freestyle Relay.

2.  The first discipline to be decided upon was the water polo. The 2013 Inter Station Water Polo tournament saw 60 players across 6 station teams competing for the coveted title. The tournament was played as two groups of 3 three teams with the group positions determining the final play-off match. The group stages saw the introduction of numerous new participants to the game and produced some notable performances. Not least of these was from Brize Norton who won Group A with two measured performances. The game of the first stages came when RAF Waddington met Honington, this tense, physical battle was fought right to the last with Honington just managing to hold the advantage in a 6 – 5 victory. The final group positions meant that Benson played High Wycombe in the 5th/6th place play off with Benson taking advantage of their numerical advantage pulling away towards the end of the game to win 10 – 4, High Wycombe can be proud of a gutsy performance in true spirit of the Mounsey Trophy with a majority female team. The 3rd / 4th place play off was between Marham and Waddington and in a scintillating encounter neither team could establish a significant lead. The game looked all but over with Waddington leading by one goal going into the last minute when Marham managed one last assault on the opposition which resulted in a goal and a 6 – 6 draw to tie for 3rd place. The Final was played between Brize Norton and Honington and ,whilst Brize Norton with a wide range of age and experience put up a valiant fight, keeping the scores close at half time, it was the youth and tenacity of Honington which came to the fore in the second half and saw them prevail with a 16 – 11 victory.

3.  The competition proved a resounding success ran by Cpl Andy Huckle, not only has it given people the opportunity to experience the sport but it has also resulted in three new players joining the RAF team. The competition was made possible thanks in no small part to Wg Cdr Anne-Marie Houghton and Mr Gus Lees on the officials’ table, ably assisted by C/T Ian Massey and SAC (T) Nick Barber. Wg Cdr Damian Orton and Cpl Andy Huckle refereed all the matches in a superbmanner. A summary of the results can be found at Annex A.

4.  The second discipline was the diving. Following a very successful if somewhat painful diving workshop the previous evening; with coaching provided by Chf Tech Kev Davidson and Flt Lt Claire Dawkins; 14 divers represented 9 stations in the 2013 inter station diving competition. The format was changed from previous years to allow for those less experienced divers to compete. One set of dives from both male and female divers from any board of their choice (springboard and platform).

5.  In the RAFW event Cpl Alex Newton (107.0 pts)of Wittering was dominant throughout, with Cpl Lucy Bullock also of Wittering but diving as an individual scored well with 83.2 pts. Flt Lt Felicity Price of Brize Norton performed well to take second place in the inter station with a score of 62.6 pts.

6.  The RAF event was a battle between three RAF squad members with SAC Mike Greenhalgh of Brize Norton coming out on top with a score of 111.8 pts. Flt Lt Adam Grant gained a second place for Waddington, with a score of 96.0 pts. Returning after several years away was Flt Lt Spenny Fielding of Boscombe Down, taking third spot with 88.0 pts

7.  Overall Brize Norton was victorious, with Marham in second place, and Wittering in third. The Competition and hard work put in at the diving workshop has resulted in a couple more divers for the diving team. Thanks must go to the table officials, Wg Cdr Anne-Marie Houghton and Flt Lt Claire Dawkins. Especial thanks go to Chf Tech Davidson for a very smooth diving competition, A Full summary of the results can be found at Annex B.

8.  The third and final competition decided was the swimming competition. Each station was able to enter an unlimited number of competitors in each event but only one competitor was nominated as the scoring swimmer for their station in the inter-station competition. 14 Stations participated in this years’ swimming events, a record number, which proved to be a very exciting and challenging competition for all. With record numbers participating, 36 heats were required on Thursday in advance of Friday’s finals. The standard of competition was as always very high and there were some great swims and closely fought races, with some new swimmers racing for the first time and 4 new swimmers recruited for the RAF Squad. Seven record-breaking swims came from; SAC James Sherwin, representing RAFC Cranwell in RAF 100m Backstroke (1.40.72), Cpl Lynsey Carveth, representing RAF Marham in RAFW 50m Butterfly (33.88), RAFW OCdt Sophie Trotter, representing RAFC Cranwell in RAFW 50m Breaststroke (38.00) and RAFW 100m Breaststroke (1.20.34), Flt Lt Ali Phippen, representing RAF High Wycombe in RAFW 100m Butterfly (1.15.88), RAFC Cranwell in RAF Medley Relay (54.82) and finally RAF Marham in RAFW Freestyle Relay (1.01.51). RAFC Cranwell won 1st place for overall Men’s and RAF Marham taking first place for overall Women’s. A summary of the results can be found at Annex C.

10.  The Championships were a great success and enjoyed thoroughly by all and as with previous years, resulted in the discovery of new, up-and-coming talent. There are many more people who have given their time to ensure this year’s event ran as smoothly as possible, and special thanks goes to:

a. Mr Gus Lees who provided support and guidance leading up to the event and was on hand to assist during the running of the day.

b. Chf Tech Matt Curwen who co-ordinated the Service and Civilian Officials assisting in all 3 disciplines; a full list of officials can be found at Annex D.

c. Chf Tech Kev Davidson for co-ordinating the diving event..
