Inducting a New Member: Pres. Irwin called on Joe Whitmore and presented him with his certificate and badge. Joe has been a frequent Rotarian visitor from Charleston, SC, and decided to become a member of our Club. We welcome Joe Whitmore – congratulations!
Service Above Self: In our club we have many members who are always ready to lend a hand. One such member is Gus Winters. Gus knew that Ted Salmon was unhappy in assisted living, so he made arrangements for Ted to move into Gus’s building. He has a lovely apartment and is very happy. Thanks Gus, you have made us all happy to have Ted back on the Island. You are a True Rotarian.
Weather: P Pres. Mike Lyons was leading the RYLA conference, but we begin with a sunny weekend and on Sunday we will havethunder showers (so says our Pres),
Stock Report: Scott Zimmerman said that the unemployment figures affected the market as well as interest rates, but we should not panic, as it will take awhile before we see an upward trend.

Rotary Foundation: P Pres. Ron Kennedy stressed the importance of giving to the Foundation. He advised us that if you want your check to go to Polio Plus, indicate so on your check.
A Lite Moment with P. Pres. Ron Assef: As you may have heard, the Bush Administration said every one of us would now get a nice rebate.
If we spend the money at Wal-Mart, it will all go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs.
If we spend it on fruit and vegetables it will all go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
If we purchase a good car it will all go to Japan or Germany.
If we purchase electronic gadgets it will all go to Taiwan or Malaysia.
We need to keep that money at home to strengthen our economy here, so the best way to spend it is for prostitutes and beer, the only truly functional businesses still in the U.S.
My name is Elliot Spitzer and I approved this ad...
Schoolhouse: Sergeant-at-arms Ron Assef, with help from Scott Zimmerman, collected many happy dollars and sad dollars from the guests who are leaving and going back up north- Sally Heitzman and Gabe Marino will be back in the fall..and thanks for so many happy dollars.
Speaker: Today our speaker was Dot Erickson who told us about her trip to Bhutan, a country located between Nepal and India. Dot narrated as she showed slides of this unique, mysterious country which just opened up to foreigners recently. Two government owned planes a day fly in and out of the country now. The surrounding mountains kept Bhutan unknown for centuries. Some of the reasons that Bhutan is ecologically the greenest country in the world are that there are no traffic lights and smoking is absolutely forbidden. You cannot fish or hunt or cut down trees. Their national sport is archery and they DO sell Beer, good but expensive. Farming is the main occupation and the women do a lot of weaving. They sell hydro electric power to India. All the buildings are standard, designed with the same architectural style with carvings displayed on the walls. Dot was a charming lady who spoke well and took questions. Thanks to Dr. Vinnie for getting such a distinguished speaker.

Dot shows where Bhutan is located Pres Dick thanks Dot for an outstanding talk

Fifty/Fifty- The winners this week were Marty Chira who gave the money to Dot to buy yarn for the hats she knits and sends to the Bhutan children to keep them warm for the long walk to school in the winter and Bill Doerler.
