President’s announcements

Ray Marshall gives Pierre Atchison his 4 year attendance award.

Ken Durand will be speaking next week about the ham sales.

Clubrunner – We will be posting links each week to get the members using our website more consistently.

Polio Countdown – October 24/17 is World Polio Day

Membership packages – We have four prospective members. Dave is looking for new membership materials. Andrew Melchers asks if it is available electronically? President Dave says he will send it out.

Club Flexibility – Family is number one priority. Hands on service. Every fourth meeting in the new year will be a service in the community meeting. This is hoped to keep the fellowship and membership active. Bob Castle mentions that we would need 4 or 5 groups and therefore multiple projects. Habitat for Humanity? Loaves and Fishes? Engagement is key.

Re-invent Rotary – these topics

Youth Exchange – we have done it in the past –we should look at doing it in the future – John LeClair will be having a joint guest speaker about the process. Doug Radford – inbound – the entire club needs to be on board to receive an international student – outbound – two person job – the entire club needs to be on board – vulnerable sector police check – this is a life changing experience for the member – Doug had an exchange student from Holland stay in his home in the 1970’s and he is still in contact with her.

Bob Barbour – there were two 60 foot trailers at the Canadian Tire parking lot – that is the norm – this year the mother’s and/or wives of Rotarians brought their 14-15 year old children/grandchildren. The children worked on the tables as they were small enough to fit between the tables. The kids were very motivated to help. The police chief donated a cruiser and an officer. The fire department offered up 2 large vans and they were loaded up three times. The Rotary club was the hero of the day. Dave – the takeaway from this is to engage young people in our service projects –

DarrenGallacher’swife Pascale had 10 of her students there to help unload yesterday and it was very successful according to Bob Castle.

Dave Paul recounts how he got involved in service clubs – Key club at school. It was associated with the Kiwanis club.

Alan mentions that Ottawa Food Bank donations are way down. Alan asked his son Josh why – Josh said it’s obvious – Gen X and millennials are not joiners – It’s very important that we, as a society, turn this around – what goes around, comes around. We must encourage young people to serve.

Saturday, October 21, 2017 – gleaning the fields at Dentz family farms– starts about 9 – show up around 8:30 – finish about noon if there are enough people – Cross town Impact helps out – Bob Castle – the Dentz family donate so much food to the local community – this goes un-noticed – Dave suggests that we should invite them for a thank you – Bob Castle and Alan Bennett will look into this. Don de Groot asks if they might be eligible for a Paul Harris? Dave thinks possibly yes.

Rotary international initiative to plant trees – Bob Barbour will speak to this next week perhaps

Reports

Gala – Pierre Atchison – wrap up meeting at the 1000 islands village – the old Grenville Christian College – It looks very different now – Coffee and gift shop on the first floor – this is a large venue that could be an option for next year. Committee is meeting to look at it, and go over things from this year – The 2017 Gala raised just shy of $35,000 – target was $30,000. This was an experiment – going more casual – it was a big hit – ticket price was half of normal – please pass on any suggestions.

Santa Claus Parade – Anne Denny – The parade is going ahead as a night event starting at 5:00pm on November 25, 2017.

Food Drive - Alan Bennett – Alan wants to thank all who came out to help. He is very appreciative – good news – over 20,000 lbs of food, this was up from 16,000 last year – bad news – goal was 26,000 lbs - $17,000 cash donations – goal was $35,000 – we were trying to bring in 3 months worth of food – we are short of our goal, but it was better than last year. Yesterday there was a large crew and a bunch of high school kids were there.

Youth Services – Doug Radford – interviewed 6 students for 5 spots in adventures in high tech – 3 from St. Mary’s – one from TISS – one from Athens

Guest speakers introduced by Bonnie Burke – We often look for speakers representing children and others in need. Amund Christensen and Natalie Lavigne – good news story about someone moving to Brockville and what they have added to our community

Natalie moved from Montreal to Toronto – lots of travel back and forth – Brockville was their stop in between – They often walked past 10 Victoria – as a long time Toronto resident, they always walked right by it. It would have been a $4 million building. It had a sign for sale on it. They looked it up as a lark – could not believe the price – decided to buy – did not know what they were going to do – they had known one another for 6 months and did not know anyone in Brockville. They fell in love with downtown. They walked around downtown. It was culture shock – first day in the house – no electricity – contractors showed up about 6 am – he had lived in the Beaches for 2 years and did not know his neighbours – They have already had 3 friends move here. You can improve your quality of life. When you get here, you realize that you don’t need burritos at 3 am. They have brought music to the café. 7 Court House Square – bigger venue – This Friday at 11:00am there is a grand opening of Court House Lodge – They have a vision that Brockville can become eastern Ontario’s Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is the nicest waterfront between Toronto and Montreal. It just needs a bit of spit and polish. This could be a real destination! Close enough to Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa. It could be a bedroom community for Ottawa. No one moves to a place for Walmart, or other box stores. It’s the downtown core that brings people and unique business to the area. Bonnie Burke asks if anything old or historical was found in the renovations of either place. No. Ray asks if it will be open every weekend. Natalie says that it is available for rent. The second floor is more conventional. The basement is more of a funky lounge. It’s also a building that sums up Brockville. There was this awesome building being used as storage and most

Capacity – standing upstairs 150 – downstairs – 125 standing

Bill Fox - How did it come to be Spitfire? – Amund is from England – his grandfather was a spitfire pilot

Don de Groot – What was your business in Montreal – Natalie – she rented a church basement in Montreal to put on a concert for friends – Rockabilly Jam – 9 years in Montreal – this is the only one in Canada – when moving to Brockville – should the event come to Brockville – they will be coming back in 2018

Bob Castle – would you like a membership application – not morning people but thanks

Amundis thanked by Bob Barbour – Bob thanks them for the talk and gives a French book which will be donated to the Brockville Public Library

Dave Paul calls Natalie and Amund a breath of fresh air. They have brought 3 businesses and 3 festivals to the city.
