/ by John Freeland -Our featured speaker last Friday, Sheryl Dickson, spoke to us regarding foster youth. Every school in Stanislaus County has students who are foster youth. These children are removed from their parents for a number of reasons, including mental health issues, physical and sexual abuse, abandonment, and neglect. Once in the system, many children will end up living in a succession of foster homes. On average, a foster teen will live in five to eight different homes before graduating from high school. For those leaving the foster care system due to court approved emancipation, within a year 25% will become homeless, one- third will be arrested, 45% will lose a / job, and 50% will not complete high school. Even those who finish high school while still in foster care face a challenge once they move from foster care to live on their own. These new adults often don’t have the skills to succeed in this new environment, and they don’t have a safety net or back up plan, such as stable parents to fall back on. In an effort to improve the success of those leaving the foster care system, Independent Living Skills Program is designed to teach foster teens skills they need to live on their own. These skills include handling money, living within a budget, obtaining a job, and finding a place to live. For those of us wanting to help these children, it can of course mean becoming a foster parent, but does not have to require that large of a commitment. Instead, it can involve becoming an adult mentor to a foster youth. Being a mentor does not ensure a life long connection with the foster youth. However, it provides to the young person a positive memory of what he or she might want to obtain in life.
/ Royal Robbins spoke to us about the Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA), which was formed in 1995 to assist the federal land management agencies in the completion, management and protection of the Trail. Royal is a world-renowned adventurer and former Modesto Rotary Club President that leads Rotarians from across the country on multi-day treks on the CDT to increase awareness and financial support. Rotarians will hit the trail again in Colorado July 9-12, 2004 to raise money to increase the involvement of youth in the completion and care of this magnificent landmark.

The 4-Way Test of the things we think, say or do –
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
