Career Ideas and Subject Choice

Choosing subjects for S2 is not about choosing a career. However there can be a link between school subjects and your career plan. If you have some idea about what you would like to do when you leave school you can check out what subjects may be needed. Here are some hints which may help you make decisions about your subject choice:

·  Do leave your career ideas open – you may have some ideas already but these may change

·  Do take subjects that you enjoy. Do take subjects you are good at

·  Do remember to take at least 2 sciences if you are interested in a scientific or medical career

·  Don’t take subjects you dislike. Don’t be influenced by your friends’ choices

·  Don’t think some subjects are for girls and some are for boys

·  Don’t take subjects that you find difficult – they will likely become more difficult in S3 and S4

·  Don’t take a subject just because you like the teacher – you may not be taught by him/her next year

Choose carefully! If in doubt come along to the Careers Drop-In session in the library

Careers Library

In S2 you will be shown how to make use of the resources in the school Careers Library – if in doubt speak to your Guidance Teacher, librarian or me. You will find lots of useful information there and everything is colour coded to make it easy for you to use.

You can also find careers information on the internet. You could use –

·  Careers Scotland website – www.careers-scotland.org.uk for information about subject choice and links to many other careers related sites. Also, people at home can help you by clicking on “Helping your children with their career”

·  PlanIT website – for information about careers and courses – www.planitplus.net
