Hello Room 34 Families,
Our second full week of school in room 34 has been wonderful! This week we discussed our classroom rules and read “David Goes to School” which helped us think about what a good student looks like. You will see what we came up with at Curriculum Night on Monday, September 22. We have been working hard on learning our Daily 5 routines. Our Read-to-Self stamina is up to 10 minutes and our Read-to-Someone stamina is up to 12 minutes. We’ve introduced some new Word Work activities as well. Below are a few pictures of students reading-to-self and reading-to-someone.
This week we started our science unit on Matter. We learned how to find similarities and differences in the things around us and sort them based on those similarities and differences.
In math, we are continuing to talk about math fats. The grade level expectation is for students to know their math facts (0-20, sums to 20). One way to assess this is through a 3 minute timed test, which we give every Wednesday. The beginning of the year addition benchmark was given this Wednesday and was sent home on Thursday. It is important that your child practices their math facts for a few minutes each night. On Friday, we took our Topic 1 test and we will begin Topic 2 on Monday.
We were pleased to see so many completed reading and math facts logs filled out from last week. The second “layer” of homework was sent home this week, which included math and phonics work. This was passed out on Monday and due back on Friday and we talked about how to do the homework in a way that works best for your family.
