Overview of the Role

The Investment Director will have opportunities to work across the portfolio but will have opportunities to build knowledge and to focus more in one domain area (success at school or engagement in work) assisting charity partners to achieve a step change in performance management and deliver impact and then helping them to achieve scale.

Role Purpose

The Investment Director works directly with charity partners to deliver the investment strategy for Impetus-PEF. They engage in the search for new charity partners, lead the subsequent due diligence identification, and then manage our investments ensuring that wider learning from this experience informs team practice and overall strategy.

Key responsibilities

Overall responsibilities

  • Achieve specific objectives identified in the business plan related to developing knowledge and influence in our domains, informing new partnerships and managing charity partnerships to optimise impact.
  • Where appropriate, manage and support junior members of the team to achieve their project objectives.

Domain related responsibilities

  • Develop a sense of what works in the sector through using expert advice and cultivating expert input and engagement.
  • Network and promote Impetus-PEF actively to develop understanding of our approach and to stimulate high quality engagement.
  • Review, codify and share learning from our work in the sector across the team and externally (working with Policy and Communications).

Investment Management with Charity Partners

  • Lead detailed qualification/due diligence to engage high quality charity partners and meet portfolio targets for new investments.
  • Manage relationship with charity partners and deliver engaged investment support to ensure that charity partners optimise impactand are sustainable at the time of Impetus-PEF exit.
  • Ensure that the pro bono and other capacity-building projects are delivered to a high standard and contribute to optimising impact.

Other

  • Raise awareness of Impetus-PEF to engage new charity partners and encourage other funders to adopt our approach.
  • Contribute to effective assessment of Impetus-PEF’s impact.
  • Ensure that charity partners actively support Impetus-PEF fundraising, donor relations and engagement.
  • Maximise cost effectiveness by use of appropriate volunteers and pro bono services.
  • Observe reporting cycles to the Impetus-PEF Investment Committee (IIC) and contribute to the development of high quality information.
  • Ensure all communications with investees, pro bono experts, Board (including IIC) and other stakeholders are prompt, clear and transparent.
  • Contribute to the operational and strategic development of Impetus-PEF as part of the Impetus-PEF team.
  • Work within Impetus-PEF strategy, policies and procedures.

Person Specification: Investment Director

Essential

  • Educated to degree level preferably with a relevant post graduate qualification.
  • Senior level responsibility and a strong track record of delivery and achievement
  • A genuine interest in the not for profit sector and an enthusiasm for working at the leading edge of charity investment and organisational change.
  • Evidence of ability to seek new business, build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across a broad range of interests and organisations.
  • A sound judge of individuals with evidence of successfully leading and managing through delegated accountability and responsibility.
  • Ability work as part of an effective team dedicated to achieving quantifiable, measureable results through individual and organisational improvement.
  • Adaptability and flexibility with evidence of ability to multi-task and manage investments in a range of organisations dealing with a wide range of people at all levels.
  • Passion, combined with strong commitment to ‘walk the extra mile’ and be an ambassador for our values, mission and purpose.
  • Strong, effective communication and influencing skills.
  • Evidence of an entrepreneurial approach and ability to adapt to working in a small ambitious organisation.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the private equity or venture capital model used in UK SMEs with ability to analyse an organisation’s management strength, business model and prospects (or may be similar experience in consulting)
  • Understanding and/or experience of the social investment market.
  • Understanding and/or experience of impact management and evaluation.
  • Relevant experience of policy or delivery work in education or work readiness.
