Role Profile: Intern (Market Research for Social Enterprise)

MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE

To explore the feasibility of developing a social enterprise toproduce biodegradable packaging that supportsthework of The Leprosy Mission and promotes sustainability.

SCOPE OF ROLE

The Intern will be askedto:-

Research business models and legalities(15%)

  • Research and produce a report on the pros and cons of various business models (e.g. for profit for good; social enterprise; TLM subsidiary, etc.) and the requirements for each
  • Identify the regulations around importing products for food packaging, requirements of the Food Standards Agency and the processes required, and write a summary report

Competitor analysis (25%)

  • Research and produce a competitors analysis report of biodegradeable packaging (in the UK and India), identify businesses, products, price points and USPs.

Primary research to identify UK markets and their specifications (40%)

  • Develop and refine a survey to undertake market research in the UK, and an appropriate data collection tool
  • Undertake research into potential target markets, both individuals and businesses
  • Analyse results
  • Identify target market specifications, price points and routes to market
  • Produce a summary report and set of recommendations for TLM to consider

Support the development of production models (5%)

  • Liaise with TLMEW’s Head of Programmes to develop business production models and analyse their viability

Gather individual customer feedbackvia TLM Trading (5%)

  • Liaise with TLM partners to develop product story and website content
  • Liaisewith TLM Tradingto gather direct customer feedback on product samples including price points

Support the development of funding proposals (10%)

  • Work with the TLMEW programmes team to identify potential donors or investors for funding
  • Identifysynergies with other environmental charities, social enterprises and campaigns

SKILLS LEVEL

  • Qualified to degree standard
  • Experience of working at degree level in a related discipline e.g. environmental science, development studies, ICT technology, economics etc.
  • Excellent research skills and ability to summarise information
  • Excellent organisational skills and able to work to deadlines
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong networking skills and able to confidently liaise with external groups
  • Excellent IT skills especially experience of database, spreadsheet and general office applications
  • Able to work as part of a team and independently

PROVEN ABILITY

  • An interest in and knowledge of international development, environment, social enterprises and policy issues
  • Experience of undertaking primary and secondary research
  • Experience of electronic filing of information and data analysis
  • Confidence to undertake face to face meetings within the business sector
