Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning)
Role outline:
The Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning) is a senior leadership position within the school, responsible for leading the teaching and learning within the school by way of the development and implementation of a teaching and learning strategic plan to ensure whole school improvement.
Key role responsibilities:
  1. To develop and manage all aspects of teaching and learning and the curriculum in line with the aims of the school and the changing landscape of prep education. This includes curriculum development, organisation of teaching and learning and development of digital learning.
  2. To run, develop and manage effective performance management for all teaching staff to enhance quality of teaching and learning.
  3. To oversee the senior schools placement process including identifying the school requirements and opportunities and how well our boys are prepared for these. Managing the preparation and placement of boys beyond Year 6.
  4. To deputise for Headmaster-designated second deputy for HM absence, first for teaching and learning matters and teaching staff.

Leadership and Management
To Lead the teaching and learning across the school, including:
  • To developstrategies for whole school improvement to ensure high standards of teaching and learning with reference to respected pedagogical thinking, whether new developments or tried-and-tested methodologies.
  • To ensure individual boy’s achievements are managed effectively to promote successful outcomes, including effective and robust tracking and target-setting, feedback and reward.
  • To design and shape the school day and working week to ensure effective teaching and learning drives logistics and staffing. To ensure teaching staffing is appropriate and skills are used effectively for teachers and teaching assistants.
  • To lead and support the work of subject leaders to ensure that they lead, manage and develop their areas of responsibility to high standards.

Teaching staff performance management
To lead and develop effective teacher and teaching assistant skill-development programmes to include observation, coaching and development of teaching staff, including teachers and teaching assistants.
This will require:
  • Active monitoring of teaching with appropriate levels of guidance, support and challenge.
  • Devising and guiding suitable group and individual teacher training to improve teaching and learning.
  • Assisting in the management of teaching and learning including handling aspects of performance management as the first port of call for teachers and teaching assistants.
  • Management of complaints related to teaching at the informal stage.

Learner Achievement
To enable each learner to achieve his best:
  • To manage assessment to ensure learning and academic success for the boys.
  • To lead and develop all aspects of assessment, feedback and parental partnership which demonstrably drives the boys’ performance.
  • To enable the effective identification of potential, learning progress and subsequent achievement for each boy in the core ability groupings (less able- some with SpLDs, slower developers and late developers, middle-ability, marginals and most able).
  • To direct processes and programmes to address the needs and assess the outcomes for these boys and manage the policies linked to these.
  • To manage the senior schools processes to ensure that boys are placed in best-fit senior schools, where possible, and work on strategies to place boys beyond Year 6 who need a school or where the school choice is not determined.
  • To work with senior schools to obtain performance feedback to improve our preparations of boys and guidance to parents.

Developing the love of learning
Strategic development of teaching and learning to enable engagement and achievement including:
  • Enabling and managing innovation using new technology, pedagogy and developments in understanding learning.
  • Managing the integration of IT to enable more successful teaching and learning.
  • Identifying needs or opportunities for curriculum development and developing plans to enable these, whether at subject level, over specific year groups, or whole-school-level.
  • Create and lead regular, dynamic events which develop, highlight and promote the school’s academic strengths both for the boys and to guide the parents.
  • Develop study skills and independent learning in the boys to enable them to enjoy and take responsibility for their learning.

Additional roles
In addition to fulfilling the requirements of a teacher within the School (with a reduced timetable), the Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning) has the following responsibilities:
• To oversee the development of an effective timetable in consultation with colleagues and ensure its annual publication in a timely way.
• To monitor the setting and efficacy of prep (homework).
• To plan Teaching INSET in agreement with the Deputy Head (Pastoral).
• To Co-ordinate Common Entrance/Scholarship and internal examinations and standardised tests.
• To keep colleagues up to date with any changes to the curriculum or examination syllabuses.
• To ensure that departmental documentation is up to date.
• To co-ordinate reports and grades and parents’ evenings.
• To co-ordinate the setting and streaming of pupils.
• To update all school policies relating to the curriculum.
Plus general (SLT) duties related to the role.
Line Management
As set out in the line management schedule, revised annually.
Standards and Expectations
A member of the SLT is expected to meet or exceed the school’s standards and expectations.
