Peter Naylor was on the first 2/4 RAR tour of Butterworth during the fall of Saigon from March to June of 1975. He was part of Rifle Company Butterworth with A Company . The OC was Major D.M. Chambers. On the 30th of March 1975 he can recall being ready to board a C130 bound for Saigon. Before we could board we received notification that a previous C130, also with members of A Coy had been refused permission to land in Vietnam because they were armed. This flight subsequently returned to Butterworth and we were stood down. He has recently been in contact with Max Chambers and he confirms his story. He also advised that the base commander received a personal signal from Gough Whitlam telling him that no armed, uniformed Australian soldier would land in Vietnam. That is why they were stood down. This piece of trivia rates as only a comma in the book of military history but it was the closest Peter ever came to active service.
