Richard Wainess Dissertation Study Procedure

  1. Introduce myself and EXPLAIN PURPOSE OF STUDY and the processes that will occur (3 min for #1 thru #5)USE INTRO FROM CONSENT FORM.
  2. Collect CONSENT FORMS.
  3. Have participants SIGN AND DATE SIGNATURE SHEET
  4. ASSIGN each participant to a preselected RANDOM NUMBER
  5. HAND EACH PARTICIPANT a packet marked with his or her number.
  6. DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SHEET
  7. SR QUESTIONNAIRE (unless electronic version is used)
  8. Have subjects FILL OUT: (10 minutes for a & b combined)
  9. DEMOGRAPHIC INFO SHEET
  10. SR QUESTIONNAIRE
  11. INTRODUCE KNOWLEDGE MAPPING. (causes, contains, part of, used for) (10 min)
  12. INTRODUCE GAME. Hands-on from start through collecting objects in Room 1 (10 min)
  13. For treatment group: Hand out instructional map and INTRODUCE MAP USAGE TO TREATMENT GROUP and PATH STRATEGIES. (5 min)
  14. EXPLAIN PATH PLANNING TO CONTROL GROUP
  15. HAND OUT TASK 1 COMPLETION FORM AND EXPLAIN, describe the first task, and remind participants they will (a) perform task, (b) fill out task completion form, and (c) create a knowledge map. (5 min)
  16. For treatment group: HAND OUT FIRST MAP.
  17. Have participants PLAY GAME (15 min)
  18. Have participants SAVE GAME.
  19. Have participants fill out:
  20. TASK 1 COMPLETION FORM (1 min)
  21. PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES QUESTIONNAIRE (4 min)
  22. KNOWLEDGE MAP (7 min)
  23. SAVE KNOWLEDGE MAP
  24. For TREATMENT: Hand out MAP FOR SECOND TASK.
  25. Have participants PLAY GAME A SECOND TIME. (15 MINUTES)
  26. Have participants SAVE GAME
  27. Have participants fill out
  28. TASK 2 COMPLETION FORM. (1 min)
  29. PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES QUESTIONNAIRE (4 min)
  30. SECOND KNOWLEDGE MAP (7 min)
  31. SAVE KNOWLEDGE MAP
  32. Conduct study completion Q&A (3 min)
  33. ASK participants if they would be INTERESTED IN PLAYING SC some more. Note who’s interested. (30 min)
  34. OFFER PARTICIPANTS AN ADDITIONAL 3O MINUTES to play the game. Note who stays, as well as the comments of those who do not stay.
  35. MAKE A NOTE of those who stay but leave before the 30 minutes are up.
  36. After 30 minutes, announce the study is over.
