RICHARD ALAN PALMER

Richard Alan Palmer was born November 13, 1935 in Austin, Texas, where he lived until 1957. He received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in June, 1957, after which he entered on three years active duty in the U.S. Navy. In September of 1960 he entered graduate school at the University of Illinois and was a University Fellow during 1960-61 and 1961-62. During 1962-63 he was a Socony-Mobil Fellow and during 1963-64, the recipient of the August Kochs Fellowship. His dissertation research, under the late T. S. Piper, was in the area of stereochemistry and electronic spectra of transition metal compounds. He completed his graduate work in 1964 (Ph.D., 1965) and remained at Illinois an additional year as a postdoctoral fellow. In 1965-66 he was an NIH postdoctoral fellow working in the laboratory of C. J. Ballhausen at the University of Copenhagen. In September, 1966 he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department of Duke University as Assistant Professor.
