RICHARD A. MEYER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Rick Meyer Memorial Scholarship is a non-renewable scholarship awarded to a Valders High School graduating senior who is planning to enroll in a technical college or a 4-yr college/university. Payment will be given upon successful completion of first semester post-secondary education, with proof of payment and grades to Student Services. This year’s scholarship is worth up to $1,000.00. (i.e. EMT training class may cost less than $1,000 therefore amount awarded would be the tuition cost of the program and books.)

Criteria:

  • This/these scholarship(s) will be awarded to an otherwise qualified VHS senior(s); however, scholarship preference is given to the Applicant(s) pursuing a degree in Public Safety Services (Criminal Justice, Police Science, Pre-Law, EMT, Paramedic, Fire Protection, etc.)
  • Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 3.000 minimum.
  • Applicant must have had employment history.
  • Applicant must have shown participation in community service.

Letters of Recommendation Information

Letters must be from a Non-School affiliated person means no one employed or on the staff of the Valders Area School District is allowed. (For example: Principal, Teachers, Coaches, Aides or Counselors.)

Submit two letters of recommendation, one from each of the following categories:

Family Friend. (Immediate family members are excluded.)

Community Member. (For example: an employer, physician, member of a religious community, 4H leader, etc.)

Attach both letters of recommendation to your scholarship application.

  • If you submit an ineligible letter, the letter will be disqualified and not forwarded to the scholarship committee.

Completed Scholarship Application Package Consists of:

  • Completed Scholarship Application.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • May NOT be ANYONE affiliated or employed by the Valders School District. This includes coaches, aides and any staff employed by VASD in any capacity. Example: If your neighbor works at Valders, they may NOT write you a letter as your family friend, etc.
  • If you submit an ineligible letter, the letter will be disqualified and not forwarded to the scholarship committee.
  • A copy of your high school transcript. You may request a transcript to accompany your application by signing the application on the first page before you turn it in to Student Service.

Applicant: Give the following information to each individual who will be writing a letter on your behalf. (Remove from package and hand out to person writing letter.)

To enhance a student’s nomination for the Richard A. Meyer Memorial Scholarship, it is essential to have specific examples of noteworthy improvements, contributions, or successes in an area or areas such as leadership, citizenship, school activity, and service to the community.

At the beginning of your letter of recommendation, indicate in what capacity you have known the nominee and for what period of time.

You may address attributes such as honesty, cooperation, integrity, and acceptance of responsibility, positive attitude, compassion, initiative, and entrepreneurship. Please limit your letter to (one page) in no less than 10-point font.

Date and sign your letter of recommendation.

Your letter of recommendation needs to be given to the nominee for inclusion with the total application package.

Do not use the applicant’s name within your letter.
