RHS Physical Education Syllabus

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Each unit of instruction will be an average of 4 weeks in duration. During each unit, one or more topics/activities may be introduced. There is an average of 10 classes per unit.

Individual Grades are derived from the following components:

  • Active participation and performance
  • Changing into appropriate attire as outlined in the PE dress code
  • Personal /Social responsibility
  • Assessmentsof unit standards and skills, strategies and concepts, Rules that govern the activity, as well as personal/ social responsibility as outlined in NY State Dept. of Educ. PE Profile
  • Completed assignments and personal electronic portfolio

Rubrics are used to determine level of participation, attire, personal/ social responsibility, unit specific conceptsand skills.

Student Personal/ Social Responsibilities:

  • Be on time to class, and don’t leave before the bell.
  • Be prepared for class with appropriate attire for active, safe participation
  • Treat yourself, peers, teachers and staff with respect.
  • Follow directions at the time they are given.
  • Use equipment properly, as instructed.
  • Be conscience of your safety, as well as others at all times.
  • Actively participate to raise the level of play for yourself and your teammates
  • No gum, candy or food is allowed during class or in PE areas.
  • Keep a pencil and Physical Education folder in your gym locker to be used occasionally in class.

PE Dress Code:

Students are required to change into t-shirt, athletic shorts, and or sweatpants/shirt and athletic sneakers. Sneakers must be firmly tied for safe play. All clothes must appropriately cover student’s body. Some units require the use of safety equipment to be worn. It is our intention to have students safely ready for fun and movementwithout the distraction or safety hazards of inappropriate attire.

Locks:

All students will receive a school issued lock and locker. Please keep all locks locked at all times, even during class to prevent theft. We can not express this enough! You are responsible to keep your valuables safe! LOCK IT UP, or don’t bring it to class! The loss of your lock will result in a $5 charge, but can be replaced immediately. Pleasebring it to our attention if you have lost your lock, or are having issues with your lock/locker.

Medical Excuses:

If a student requires a “gym excuse” from a physician, please request a form or letter that lists specifically what the studentcan do in PE. All notes that ask for students to be excused from all activities must be brought to the school nurse. We will adapt activities to accommodate the student’s needs/restrictions. Students will be given alternative assignments when they can not participate. Any student who is unable to participate for an extended period of time, will be given assignments at the discretion of the teacher.

Absences and Class make-up requirements

Students earn daily credit for performance in class. Unexcused absences can not be made up, and the student loses all credit for those days.

Students are responsible for all information, assignments or assessments they have missed, but they do not lose class credit until they have missed 3 excused classes in a single quarter. Missed assignments can always be found on our Google classroom. Students can make up credit in a timely manner at the discretion of and in coordination with the teacher. It is the STUDENTS responsibility to arrange a make up time with the teacher.

Any student who is absent from school for an extended period of time will make up the credit as assigned by teachers and administration on an individual basis.

TARDIES: Students have 4 minutes after the late bell to be in the gym and ready for participation. If the student has not arrived, prepared and turned in their attendance card by this time, they will be considered late. They will lose points (credit) for lack of personal responsibility.

I have read and understand the expectations in physical education class as well as how the student will be evaluated in class. I also understand that PE is a New York state mandated class with specific standards to be accomplished for commencement, and the students grade will be reflected in his/her overall Grade Point Average.
