Call to Order

The Stated meeting of the Session of Reynolda Church for March 20, 2014, was called to order by Pastor Lawson.Elder Bridgette Blackwell (EoC) shared prayer concerns for this week. There was a time of prayer for congregational needs and the Session meeting. Pastor Wright closed in prayer.

Approval of Agenda

The agenda was moved and seconded for approvalwith the following exceptions:

-Move Austin Thomas up under Clerk’s Report.

-Add Sharing the Light under Executive Committee report.

Approved unanimously.

Omnibus Motion

Moved and seconded to approve. Passed unanimously.

Clerk’s Report

-Addendum packet for tonight includes two written PAL reports, minutes from the VC Membership Lunch, and the UC Commission meeting.

-Next Session Meeting – April 17, 2014

-2014 Membership Lunch – TBD

-Next Presbytery meetings: April 25-26, Christ Community Church, Montreat,

-The following were selected to attend this Presbytery meeting: Brandon Williams, Alan Wright, Chris Lawson

-The three email votes taken since the last meeting all passed unanimously. Results:

Item 1 (Emergency Procedures for the Union Cross Campus): 10 Yes, 0 No, 0 Pull

Item 2 (Missions Budget re-vote): 7 Yes, 0 No, 0 Pull

Item 3 (Capital Budget Committee policy amendments): 11 Yes, 0 No, 0 Pull

-General Assembly will be held June 18-21 in Knoxville, TN. Attending from Reynolda: Chris Lawson, Alan Wright, Jeff Deaton, Bob Roach, Barrett Johnson, Brandon Williams (observer).

Meet Austin Thomas

Pastor Brandon Williams introduced Austin Thomas, a Wake Forest Divinity School student, who would like to work with Brandon as an intern this summer. Austin gave testimony about the call on his life. He has a particular call to minister to college students. The Session laid hands on Austin and Pastor Brandon prayed for him. Moved and seconded: To approve Austin Thomas as an intern in college ministry for the summer. Passed unanimously.

Easter Schedule

Pastor Lawson discussed our Easter schedule.

-It will include a large Easter egg hunt on April 12.

-On April 13 the entire church will worship together at the UC campus.

-On April 18 we will have our traditional Good Friday service.

-On April 20, Easter Sunday, we will meet at St. Peter’s World Outreach Center at 6:30 AM for a sunrise service. There will be two services at 9:30 and two services at 11:00 at the Village, plus the usual 11:00 service at Union Cross.

Moved and seconded: That services on Easter be held as outlined above. Approved unanimously.

Executive Director’s Report

Mickey Thigpen began his report with prayer.

-All ovens in the kitchen are now operational.

-Mickey discussed volunteers who work with children at Reynolda. Currently everybody who works with children undergoes a background check. By common consent of the Session, volunteers whose checks result in a yellow flag will be asked for an extra form of id.

-The financial report through February was discussed.

Capital Budget Committee Report

Hugh McPherson, chair of the Capital Budget Committee, began his report with prayer.

-Hugh discussed the situation we have with the Johnston Building and possible options for dealing with it.

-Recommendations:

  • Authorize New Atlantic Contracting to perform structural repairs. Estimated cost: $3000-4000.
  • Authorize Capeharts Roofing to perform roofing repairs in three phases at costs of $40,755, $38,755, and $38,755, plus possible additional charges for replacing wood decking under roof tiles.
  • Environmental studies of the building will continue.
  • Perform periodic inspections to insure temporary patches performed in phase 1 are maintaining water tightness.

The Session unanimously approved the above recommendations.

Administrative Commission Report

-The Session received written reports from Christal Giese, our Children’s Director; and Chris Dolon, Director of Student Ministries.

Executive Pastor’s Report

-Pastor Lawson discussed plans to revitalize the Boundless campaign. Starting after Easter:

  • Monday before third Sunday, a Boundless email will go to all email recipients.
  • Third Sunday each month, we will discuss Boundless finances, testimonies, or vision, and cycle through these subjects monthly.
  • The week following third Sunday, a Boundless item in the Days Ahead email.

Senior Pastor’s Report

Pastor Wright began with prayer.

-Free Yourself Be Yourself (FYBY) conference is coming up at the Union Cross campus April 5.

-Alan and Abby have purchased tickets to go to Papua New Guinea to celebrate a people group getting scriptures in their language for the first time.

-Jeff Deaton shared information about Sharing the Light (STL):

  • Immediate ministry plans
  • Motion from STL board to create seats on the STL board for two people recommended by the Reynolda Session to show the healthy relationship between STL and the church.
  • STL held discussions with Dunham recently. As a result, there are changes coming in the STL website. The focus will be on getting email addresses and building relationships with people who give us their address.

-STL plans to move to a new database technology to support these changes.

-STL also plans to refocus the STL instance of the Church App so that is more STL/radio focused, and launch a new instance of the Church App instance branded as a Reynolda Church app.

Union Cross Campus Update

Pastor Barrett Johnson began with prayer.

-Barrett shared a testimony from a person who has been attending the Union Cross campus. The Session rejoiced to at the goodness of God in this young man’s life.

Executive Committee Report

-There are conversations ongoing among staff about when to perform baptisms.

Read and approved the minutes of this meeting.
