Weekly Market Report Week 19. 2013

Friday 03/05/2013 to Thursday 09/05/2013

Vegetables: Moderate to good trading. Falling volumes caused some items to undergo a price surge.

·  Broccoli values pushed up by €4 to€5 as quantities from Spain tightened

·  Values for French cauliflower firmed out to 1250c per 8 with prices up across Europe in what is often a time of short supply before the summer varieties come on stream

·  Spanish iceberg lettuce made strong gains. Fetching up to €15 per 12. Quality remained good.

·  Steady supplies of carrots from Israel and Spain were slightly easier at 600c per 10Kg.

·  Round tomato prices drifted slightly. Canary Is. lots were still slightly dominant over Dutch. Fresh Dutch supplies were more backward than Canary Is and they held a €1 advantage. Cherry vine varieties were snapped up by buyers at up to €13 per 10x300grms.

·  A tightening in cucumber quantities caused prices to push up by a euro on last week. Sales fluctuated.

·  Strong performances from Yellow and Red peppers kept prices at well over €15 per 5Kg. Choice Green lots fetched up to 1250 per 5Kg

Potatoes : No sign of weakness in potato prices; quotes from other European markets remained high also. Sources at production level indicated growth levels were taking on a more typical appearance but ‘first earlies’ were still likely well behind seasonal norms.

·  Rooster was available in quantities equivalent to unwavering sales. Returns varied from €7 to €9per 10Kg according to brand reputation.

·  Interest in Golden Wonder was slack and they tended to fare better in certain provincial outlets.

·  Italian spring crop Spunta came on stream but imports were curtailed by their prevailing high price.

Fruit: Some ‘rapid- fire’ sales were noted for good quality fruit at competitive levels.

·  Sales of apples varied according to brand and price. Argentinean Royal Gala came off second best to Brazilian and Chilean samples. New Zealand Cox were sluggish as buyers sought out more competitive labels.

·  Sales of pears improved as the week progressed with ample supplies in store.

·  Red grape prices surged following what is expected to be a temporary dip in supplies. Green Thompsons seedless were buoyant sellers at €11/12 per 4.5Kg.

·  Large supplies of satsumas from Peru are imminent.

·  Egyptian oranges attracted high volume sales. Moroccan were less popular. Small amounts of good quality late season Spanish sold well.

·  Competitively priced Spanish strawberries cleared quickly.

·  Values for Spansh raspberries fluctuated from €15 to €20 according to supply.

Flowers: A slight improvement in overall sales. Experienced vendors kept a nice balance between supply and a selective demand.

·  Chrysanthemums moved in reasonable volumes.

·  Lily quantities were nicely harmonized to a steady turnover.
