EXERCISE 33.1

Revising: Adjectives and adverbs

Revise the following paragraph to use adjectives and adverbs appropriately. Mark the number preceding any sentence that is correct as given.

1 The eighteenth-century essayist Samuel Johnson fared bad in his early life. 2 His family was poor, his hearing was weak, and he received little formal education. 3 After failing as a schoolmaster, Johnson moved to London, where he was finally taken serious as a critic and dictionary maker. 4 Johnson was real surprised when he received a pension from King George III. 5 Thinking about his meeting with the king, Johnson felt proudly that he had not behaved badly in the presence of the king. 6 Now, after living cheap for over twenty years, Johnson finally had enough money to eat and dress good. 7 He spent his time writing and living stylish.
