College Math – Syllabus 2017-2018

Welcome to College Math! This course is a review of the mathematics you have covered to get you up to speed for college math. The goal of this class will be student mastery of each and every topic.

Classroom Procedures

1.Entering the classroom - When you come into the room, sharpen your pencil and go to your seat. Have your materials and your homework out on your desk. Look at the board and start on the opener problems.

If you come in the classroom after the bell, you are late. Do not argue that point. If you have a pass, have it out when you come in.

2.Leaving the classroom - The teacher will decide when it is time to “pack-up”. Students will not quit early. The teacher will dismiss the class – not the bell. Don’t congregate by the door! Make sure your work area is clean before leaving.

3.When you are absent - It is your responsibility to find out what work you have missed. The assignments will be posted in the classroom, on the notes, and on my website. For however many days the student misses, that is how many days he or she shall receive to make-up work. If you are absent for a test or quiz, you are expected to make it up on the first day that you come back. Plan on staying after school or coming in during study lab to make up any and all tests and quizzes that are missed.

4.Taking tests and quizzes - All tests and quizzes are to be done in pencil. Notes and homework assignments may be done in pen. Show all work on both tests and quizzes. Partial credit may be given when work has been shown.

Cell phones are not to be out during a test. They are to be placed under the student chair or not even brought to class. Having a cell phone out during a test or quiz will result in a 0 for the assessment.

5.Using the hall pass - Students must ask before leaving the room. If hall pass use gets excessive, you will not be allowed to leave the room for a period of time. You must have an agenda signed in order to leave the room.

6.Asking a question - Please raise your hand and wait to be called upon to ask a question. Asking questions is encouraged and can increase your success in this class. Please do not hesitate to ask a question if you do not understand something explained in class.

7.Cell phones - If you have a cell phone out while I am teaching, I will take it and it will go to cell phone jail.If you decide that you cannot pay attention while I am teaching on a regular basis because of your cell phone, it will be taken to the office with a referral and a parent will be called to come and pick it up.

Homework: Homework is generally issued every night. The purpose of homework is to aid students in mastery of the given topic. Homework will be checked daily and answers will be provided either orally or on the overhead. Homework will usually be worth 5 points each. Partial credit could be given if the student does a portion of the assignment.

Notebook: You will need to get a 3 ring binder and loose-leaf paper for this course. You will be expected to take notes and add all class examples to this notebook. It is important to keep your notebook updated because it can be collected and graded throughout the grading period. In addition, there will be times when the notebook can be used on tests or quizzes so make sure it is complete.

Calculators: Because of the technology used in this class, you will need to use a calculator daily in class and on your homework. It is highly recommended that you purchase a TI 30 or 34 of your own. A cell phone calculator is not allowed, and I do not have enough calculators for everyone. You need to have a calculator that you know how to use properly.

Grades: Your grade will be an average of 70% of your tests and quiz scores and 30% of your notebook checks, homework, classroom participation, and occasional projects. Grades will be determined using a point system.

Final Note: I highly encourage each student to work to his or her potential. I hold high expectations for all students. If at some point you find yourself falling behind or not understanding the recent topic, do not hesitate to come and seek help. I am looking forward to working with all of you during this year.

I have read and understand that not following these rules will result in negative consequences.
