Bronchoscope

Competency Statement: To be able to demonstrate safe and effective cleaning, reprocessing handling of bronchoscopes used for pulmonary procedures. Due the critical nature of these scopes, complexity and potential for harm to patients all staff cleaning scopes must have a 100% pass rate to safely reprocess scopes.

Defined Expectations/Standards/Criteria

1.  / Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
2. / Wipes down the insertion tube with a detergent soaked sponge, immersing distal tip detergent and depressing suction valve to aspirate detergent for 30 seconds – removes tip and aspirates air for 10 seconds. Remove suction and biopsy valve, discard appropriately.
3. / Turns off light source and attaches water resistant cap to electrical connector. Transport to reprocessing area by approved method.
Leakage Testing
1.  /

Fill sink with clean water, confirm that there is no water in leakage tester cap, confirm air is being emitted, connect leakage tester to scope and confirm bending section is inflated

2.  / Immerse entire scope in water observe for 30 seconds while angulating the bending section – observe for bubbles streaming from scope if present scope has a leak – remove scope from water and call biomed for repair
3.  / Remove scope from water, turn off air, disconnect leakage tester wait until the bending section contracts to its pre-expansion size
Manual Cleaning
1. / Fill sink with detergent solution prepared as recommended by the manufacture, with scope in a free/neutral position, immerse scope in solution.
2. / Use the suction channel cleaning adapter to suction detergent through the instrument/suction channel for 30 seconds.
3. / Using the suction channel cleaning adapter & a 30 ml syringe to pull detergent through instrument/suction channel, disconnect suction channel cleaning adapter
4. / Using a channel cleaning brush, brush instrument channel, biopsy channel & suction channel until all debris is removed.
5. / Using sponge thoroughly clean all external surfaces.
Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER) High-Level Disinfection
1. / Test the potency of the disinfectant solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions
2. / Inspect the connections according the AER manufacture’s instructions
3. / Verify that the proper connector is being used for the bronchoscope being reprocessed. and that accessories are access and placed in holders and clips as indicated by AER manufacture’s instructions
4. / Operate the AER according to the AER manufacture’s instructions
5. / Ensure the bronchoscope is soaked in disinfectant solution according to the liquid chemical germicide manufacture’s instructions recommendation for time and temperature
6. / Perform the terminal steps that the AER does not perform – alcohol and air purge
7. / Remove the scope from the AER and sort the scope in accordance with the manufactures guidelines
