RESPONSIBLE TO:The Senior Steward
HOURS: 39 hours per week including shifts covering day, evening, weekends, bank and public holidays
PRIMARY JOB PURPOSE
A key and varied role within a busy team serving, patients, visitors, other Hospice users and staff. Assisting all departments to meet the needs of St Christopher’s in its service to the community.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
To undertake a wide range of both patient/visitor facing and support duties as part of the Steward team:
- Day to day security service, locking and unlocking, setting and un-setting alarms, carrying out regular security patrols etc
- Setting up rooms for various meetings, events, and training
- Movement of empty and full medical gas cylinders
- Assist the nursing teams in transferring patients on admission to wards
- Provide a newspaper service to patients and internally within the Hospice
- Day to day security service, locking and unlocking, setting and un-setting alarms, carrying out regular security patrols etc
- Ensure that Helpdesk and Telephone requests are dealt with in line with the Stewards service level agreement
- Provide a mail service, receive, process and distribute mail, sort frank and despatch outgoing mail
- Ensure that all rubbish is removed and placed in the appropriate bins, ensuring that the outside bin areas are kept clean and tidy at all times.
- General transportation of goods and materialsand if required provide assistance to the patient transport team both off site and within the Hospice.
Driving Hospice vehicles as required:
- Deliver or pick up Hospice equipment for patient home use
- Clean and soiled laundry
- Drugs and medication for patient use
- Samples and blood for transfusion
- Domestic and clinical waste
- Fundraising Materials
- Delivery of stores
- Assist in the transportation of patients
- Ad hoc portering tasks, such as bed and furniture moving
- Convey cash and cheques to and from the bank for processing
- Deal with external contractors / deliveries, distributing as necessary
- Move deceased patients as appropriate, assisting undertakers, locating the deceased in the mortuary or viewing rooms
- Assist the Senior Steward in managing the Mortuary booking system and associated patient documentation
- Ensure the Mortuary, Viewing Room and associated areas are well presented, safe, clean and tidy
- Maintain the Hospice grounds, car parks, gardensand any other designated areas ensuring they are well presented, safe, clean and tidy
- General maintenance of equipment, such as daily/weekly checks of condition, checking/cleaning vehicles
- Be part of the Hospice fire team
- To assist the Orderlieswith ad-hoc tasks such as hanging curtains/high level cleaning
- Any other duties that may be required to facilitate the smooth running of St Christopher’s

Qualifications / Essential / DesirableGood standard of education including Maths and English / √

Ability to deal sensitively face to face with dying patients and their relatives / √
Ability to lift (with aids if required) weights equivalent to 2 filled sacks, sometimes in situations where access is not straightforward / √
