Purpose Of Job:To be responsible for the provision of a handypersons service in Southwark

1. Delivery of a handypersons service in Southwark

  • To provide a reliable and professional Handyperson Service to a consistently high standard including (but not exclusively):

Supplying and fitting key safes

Securing carpets

Securing trailing wires and flexes

Fitting bathroom accessories including bathroom cabinets

Replacing curtain rails, poles and blinds

Joinery work, including fitting shelves and interior doors

Unblocking sinks

Replacing toilet seats, sealant around bath/sink

Fitting stair rails, grab rails.

Fitting Yale & Chubb locks

Minor gate and fence repairs or replacements

Putting up shelves, pictures and mirrors

  • Be responsible for ordering and obtaining any materials necessary to carry out a required job, keeping records of the work carried out and the materials needed for each job
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with current standards applicable, Health and Safety requirements and to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Ensure the client’s home is left clean and tidy on completion of the work and be responsible for the safe and proper removal of waste and debris.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed.

2. Develop the capacity of the service through promotion and volunteer and placement training

  • Promote and publicise the service and other AUKL&S services
  • Provide on the job opportunities for volunteers and placements to learn basic skills
  • Provide support for volunteers and placements to undertake basic handyperson skills
Organisational Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the needs of older people are central to everything we do
  • Provide a positive and supportive working environment to all staff and volunteers
  • Ensure the values of AUKLS are upheld across the organisation
  • Meet all legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Carry out administrative duties in connection with the post
  • Contribute to the overall achievement of AUKLS mission, and objectives
  • Attend regular supervisions, staff and team meetings as requested
  • Undertake any other duties as determined by Chief Executive of AUKLS
  • Carry out duties in accordance with Age UK Lewisham and Southwark's policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities etc

Promotion of a Supportive Working Environment

Training and Development

Training and development of staff and volunteers is a key expectation of all staff employed by the organisation. They will demonstrate their commitment to staff and/or volunteer development by assessing skills, planning development activities, discussing outcomes and evaluating effectiveness. They will be expected to motivate, encourage, coach and support staff and/or volunteers towards the outcomes agreed.

Person Specification

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate empathy for older people and be committed to the promotion of a supportive and person centred working environment.

It is essential that the postholder has the following experience and knowledge:

  • Experience of working in the building trade
  • Experience of working within a domestic environment
  • Experience of working with members of the public
  • Awareness of health and safety Issues, risk assessments, COSHH RIDDOR etc.
  • An awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of volunteers and older people

It is essential that the post holder has the following skills and abilities

  • Practical skills and ability to carry out a wide range of small repairs and adaptations to a high standard
  • Good listening and verbal communication skills
  • Written communication skills and the ability to carry out basic record keeping tasks
  • Good team working skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload effectively
  • Ability to use own initiative, work with limited supervision and accept responsibility for own work
