RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA) is currently recruiting for a part-time graduate student Research Assistant (RA) for the Mental Health in Adults and Children-Frugal Innovations (MAC-FI) project.

Who we are

CARMHAis an internationally recognized research centre conducting innovative and interdisciplinary scientific research related to mental health and substance use, primarily in the areas of health systems and population health and epidemiology. CARMHA is based within the Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University.

Our primary mission is to conduct research, generate evidence, and translate knowledge into policy and practice in a way that is innovative, relevant and effective in preventing and reducing the burden of disease related to mental health and substance use.

The MAC-FI project is a 3-year study, funded by Grand Challenges Canada, which is testing and scaling up a Supportive Self-Management intervention for depression in Vietnam. Working with the Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) in Hanoi and the Government of Vietnam, this initiative is contributing to the development of the mental health system in Vietnam, filling a gap in treatment for common mental disorders.

Description of position

Working under the supervision of Dr. John O’Neil (Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences and Principal Investigator, MAC-FI project) and Dr. Jill Murphy (Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Director), the graduate student research assistant (RA) will provide research and project coordination support. Tasks include:

  • Supporting the preparation and submission of a CIHR project grant, to be submitted in September 2017
  • Coordination and support to data analysis team, including the Data Management Committee
  • Support with the preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication
  • Support with the development and submission and renewal of ethics applications
  • Preparation and collaboration on literature reviews and study protocols as needed
  • Preparation of reports to our funder and other project outputs as needed

Note that there could be an opportunity to connect practicum, capstone or PhD research with this position if the applicant in interested in global mental health.

Essential qualifications

•Current graduate student in health or social sciences

•Passionate and committed to contributing to the field of global health and/or mental health and addictions research

•Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills in English

•Demonstrated understanding of both qualitative and quantitative researchmethods and principles and experience contributing to detailed literature reviews

•Effective at time managementand excellent organizational skills

•Trustworthy and works well independently and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team

•Good problem solving skillsbut willing to ask for advice and support when needed

Desired qualifications

  • Experience preparing reports to funding agencies and preparing grant proposals, including familiarity with CIHR’s ReseachNet system
  • Experience with project coordination and with working in multi-partner projects
  • Experience working cross-culturally

Position Type

Six-month part-time (average 10 hours per week) contract with option to renew.

Desired start date: July 17th 2017.

Salary

10 hours a week @ $20 per hour

Location

Flexible, with ability to attend meetings at SFU Burnaby and Harbour Centre campuses
