SYLLABUS

BIOLOGY 60L

FALL 2004

Biology 60L, an audiotutorial one-unit lab in Human Biology, is designed to introduce students to elementary experiments in human anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. Previous or concurrent enrollment in Biology 60 (lecture) is HIGHLY recommended. This course along with Biology 60 fulfills a lab science requirement at most colleges.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: (available at LBCC bookstore)

  1. Laboratory Manual for Human Biology, (in new and bound condition; NO XEROXED COPIES; DO NOT bring another student’s old lab book to class). YOU MUST HAVE THE LAB MANUAL BY THE SECOND LAB ASSIGNMENT. You must have the current edition of the lab manual (second edition).
  1. Scripts for the Human Biology Laboratory.
  1. Preserved Specimens (two boxes - make sure they are labeled Bio. 60L and have a blue or red dot). WAIT for further instructions before buying the box.
  1. Dissection Materials (scalpel, scissors, forceps, probe).
  1. Gloves, goggles, & mask. NOTE: Safety glasses do not provide adequate protection in the AT lab.
  1. Scantron #884 (2).

ATTENDANCE:

Weekly attendance at your registered lab day and time is required. There is NO RESCHEDULING of labs (i.e. NO MAKE-UPS FOR LABS--EITHER PRIOR TO OR AFTER YOUR SCHEDULED TIME). ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED EACH WEEK WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FLEX DAYS AND HOLIDAYS. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND 80% OF THE CLASS MEETINGS. ANY STUDENT WITH MORE THAN THREE ABSENCES AND/OR THREE INCOMPLETE LABS (SEE #13 UNDER GENERAL INFORMATION) WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE OR RECEIVE A GRADE OF “F” (if after the final drop date). STUDENTS WHO ARRIVE AFTER THE TARDY PERIOD WILL BE MARKED ABSENT. YOU WILL BE INFORMED OF THE TARDY PERIOD THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.

PRESERVED SPECIMENS:

The study of preserved specimens is a requirement of this course. There are NO EXCEPTIONS AND NO ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENTS. Pregnant women and women intending to become pregnant during the semester, should seek the advice of their physician regarding enrollment in this course.

There are two boxes of preserved specimens for this course. Due to limited supplies, you must purchase the specimens in groups of three or four. DO NOT PURCHASE THE BOX UNTIL YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR A GROUP. A student discount may be given by the bookstore with your student I.D. card. There are no exchanges or returns of the preserved specimens. Be sure to purchase the Bio. 60L box (red dot and blue dot) and not the Bio. 41L box. All members should contribute equally to the cost of the specimens. It is a good idea to exchange phone numbers with all members in your group so that the materials can be shared for study purposes.

  1. Circulation Lab: bring vacuum-packed sheep heart and a zip-loc bag (sandwich size) to class.
  1. Nervous System Lab: Bring vacuum-packed sheep brains and sheep eye (all in one package), and a zip-loc bag (sandwich size).
  1. Excretory and Reproduction Lab: Bring vacuum-packed rat and a zip-loc bag (gallon size) to class. Your instructor will tell you which sex pig to purchase.

CARE OF PRESERVED SPECIMENS:

Keep the specimens moist by spraying them weekly with amphyl (D-212). Wrap specimens in wet paper towels and place in zip-loc bag. This will prevent mold from forming. Keep specimens in a COOL PLACE AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS. You may want to purchase a styrofoam ice chest to hold and transport the specimens (ice is optional). DO NOT FREEZE SPECIMENS. Preserved specimens can only be turned in the day of the practicum for proper disposal.

PRESENTATIONS AND EXPERIMENTS:

For most of you, this will be your first experience with audio-tutorial learning. A multimedia approach will be used in the presentation of the material in the lab. You will view presentations, which will illustrate the principles being taught. In addition, you will perform experiments which demonstrate the concepts discussed in the presentation. Preparation for each lab assignment will involve the use of the Script Book for answering questions in the Lab Manual (refer to the appendix in the back of the Lab Manual for questions to answer ahead). This will facilitate your viewing and listening to the program so that you can finish the lab assignment. Materials for performing the experiments will be located on tables/counters under the GREEN sign indicating the part of the lab exercise you are working on.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  1. You are responsible for all information and instructions (written and verbal given during the class period. If you are absent, late, or leave early, you are still accountable for the information and instructions.
  1. Answer as many general questions in the lab exercise as possible before class so that you will be familiar with the concepts and terminology discussed in the program. Questions to answer ahead are listed in the appendix of your Lab Manual.
  1. Exams and practicum are based on information in the lab manual (including the appendix), script book, and the slide & tape program. A practicum involves the identification of structures. Exams may include (but are not limited to) experimental procedures, results, explanation of results, diagrams, definitions, and concepts. See section on make-ups on page four.
  1. Practicum and exam results will be given in class.
  1. Your are not permitted to copy exam or practicum questions or answers.
  1. All scantrons and answer sheets will be retained by the Life Science Department.
  1. Only final exam scores and course grades will be posted.
  1. The order of lab assignments (chapters) listed on the Laboratory Schedule MAY NOT ALWAYS BE IN THE SAME ORDER as listed in the lab manual. Always refer to the Laboratory Schedule for each day’s lab exercise.
  1. It is your responsibility to check exam and practicum answer keys when the instructor makes them available. This is the only time you will be permitted to check the answer keys.
  1. You are responsible for checking the print-out of your scores at the end of the semester. Any inconsistencies must be reported to your instructor at that time.
  1. Verification from Disabled Student Services will be required for time extensions for exams and practicums. This information must be provided by the SECOND class meeting.
  1. You are required to check-in when you arrive for class. SEE ATTENDANCE INFORMATION ON PAGE ONE.
  1. To receive credit for a lab assignment the following three criteria must be met: 1) view the entire program, 2) complete all the questions in the lab assignment, 3) complete all the experiments in the lab assignment. Failure to meet the three criteria will result in an incomplete lab.
  1. It is your responsibility to have your assignment checked by the instructor before leaving class. Failure to have your assignment checked by your instructor before leaving class results in an incomplete lab.

PRACTICUMS:

Practicums require the student to recognize and accurately write out the names of structures. Practicums consist of 25, two point questions. No scantron is required (answer sheet will be provided). Correct spelling is required for full credit. This is a timed exam in which students move from station to station and identify the tagged structures.

PRACTICUM I;

Practicum I will cover the bones and bone markings of the appendicular skeletal system, the parts of a long bone (all structures listed on pages 42 and 43 in the lab manual), and the structures on the sheep heart (all structures listed on page 91 in the lab manual). There will be 15 questions on the bones and 10 questions on the sheep heart. A full skeleton (in the tall cabinet) and two color photographs of the sheep heart are available for review in D-212. The sheep hearts can only be turned in the day of the practicum for proper disposal.

PRACTICUM II:

The following preserved specimens will be on Practicum II: Sheep brain, sheep eye, and fetal pig. There will be 15 questions on the pig, five questions on the sheep eye, and five questions on the sheep brain. Be able to identify the structures listed on pages 151, 152, 153 (brain and eye) and pages 126, 127, 186, 187, 188 (fetal pig). You are responsible for both the male and female reproductive structures on the fetal pig. Demo Pigs will be available for study in D-212. The Demo Pigs will be in a white bucket labeled “Bio. 60L Demo Pigs”. DO NOT REMOVE THE DEMO PIGS FROM D-212. There are color photographs of the brain, eye, and pig in D-212. Use these photographs to help you identify the structures. Also, there are black and white photographs of the fetal pig posted on the bulletin board in the classroom. The Dissection Guide & Atlas to the Fetal Pig by Smith and Schenk is also recommended. Preserved specimens can only be turned in the day of the practicum for proper disposal.
