The School of Nursing has several sources of funding to support student research, including the development of research ideas. They are the Eckburg Dissertation Award,Robert and Carroll Heideman and Jean E. Johnson Research Awards and theEckburg Research Award. Below is information on eligibility and submission requirements.

CHARLES ECKBURG DISSERTATION AWARD

This funding is available to dissertators who do not have other funding for their research. To apply for this, complete the attached Charles Eckburg Dissertation Award application. Due October 3, 2011.

HEIDEMAN and JOHNSON

Applications are included in this document and are due by 4:30 p.m.,Monday, October 3, 2011. Send application(s) to Carol Aspinwall, School of Nursing, K6/136, 600 Highland Ave., Madison, WI 53792. Students will be notified of awards by late-November. Funding is awarded as a scholarship and will be available by the middle of December.

ECKBURG RESEARCH AWARD

Applications (an original and 5 copies) are due to Carol Aspinwall, K6/136, by 4:30 p.m., Monday, October 3, 2011. Students will be notified of awards by mid-November. Funding is awarded as a scholarship and will be available by the middle of December.

Charles Eckburg Dissertation Award

The Charles Eckburg Scholarships were created in 1996 for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Nursing. At the doctoral level they are used to fund dissertation research (usually at the level of $1,000 per student) and are awarded using the following criteria:

  1. Academic performance in the doctoral program in nursing;
  1. Quality of doctoral dissertation proposal;
  2. Student’s anticipated budget for the dissertation;
  3. Other monetary awards being received by the applicant (e.g. through the School of Nursing and/or GraduateSchool) may be considered; priority will be given to student with greater need for resources to conduct their dissertation research.
  4. Student recipients of the scholarship may not be in any way related to any member of the Charles Eckburg Foundation Board of Directors.

Heideman and Johnson Research Awards

Below is information on eligibility and submission requirementsfor the Robert and Carroll Heideman Research Award and the Jean E. Johnson Research Award.

ELIGIBILITY:

One student will be chosen to receive each award. The funds can be used to support travel, equipment, conference registration, or other expenses related to research or development of your research interests.

Heideman Award: One award of $3,000 will be available. Students eligible: Undergraduate Honors, Early Entry Option, MS, Doctoral (DNP & PhD) students, and postdocs.

Johnson Award: One award of $1,000 will be available. Students eligible: Early Entry Option, Doctoral (DNP & PhD) students, and postdocs.

Eckburg Research Award

Below is information on eligibility, submission requirements and the review process for the Eckburg Research Awards. This is the only call for research funding for the 2011-2012 academic year.

ELIGIBILITY:

Graduate students in the School of Nursing, including Early Entry Option doctoral students, master’s students, and doctoral (DNP & PhD) students are invited to apply for funds to support their research. Most awards will be for $1,000 to $3,000.

APPLICATION CONTENT:

The application follows the NIH format for submitting a research grant to give students experience with requesting funding. For the submission, use Arial font, type size 11 or higher.

  1. Face Page.

Provide a title less than 51 characters, campus address, email address, phone number, student name, and advisor name.

  1. Abstract on NIH abstract form.
  2. Biosketch for project leader (student) and co-investigators.

Use NIH biosketch form.

  1. Budget page and brief justification.

Use NIH format. The budget justification is required and should not exceed ½ page. Salary support for the student is not an allowable expense.

  1. Narrative (3 pages single-spaced) describing the study. Include:

a)Specific aims.

b)Preliminary data (if any).

c)Significance and impact on advancing nursing knowledge.

d)Methods summary.

e)Anticipated results and indication of next step (subsequent study or application for extramural support).

f)A 3-page appendix is optional if you wish to include copies of instruments.

REVIEW PROCESS AND CRITERIA:

The proposals will be reviewed by the Research Committee. In addition to the scientific merit of the project, the potential impact of the proposed project on nursing knowledge will be evaluated. Reviewers will consider the following in their review of the proposals:

  • Significance of the problem.
  • Methodological rigor.
  • Innovativeness.

The review committee will provide feedback to the students on the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal.
