Position Summary
Under the supervision of the road and bridge supervisor, the water/wastewater operator/sign technician is a non-exempt position responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance with KDHE standards on treatment of sewage water and potable drinking water. The
water/wastewater operator/sign technician is responsible for the placement and repair of all traffic signs within Geary County. The employee in this position maintains an inventory of traffic signs and determines where signs are to be placed according to the manual of uniformed traffic control devices.
Essential Functions
· Makes regular inspections of all water and wastewater treatment facilities.
· Maintains pumphouse and chlorine room.
· Inspects, tests and services pumps, compressors, timers, pressure switches, calibrators, and other related equipment for both operations.
· Monitors chlorine dosage of potable water, wet well levels, flows, visibility, DOB levels, chlorine content in effluent, and oil levels in all equipment.
· Checks for leaks, records statistics.
· Cleans, scrapes and removes foam from chlorine build up.
· Monitors outside contractors when repair and maintenance work is performed.
· Maintains daily logs at facilities.
· Takes samples and runs tests, performs data collection.
· Mixes and adds chemicals as needed.
· Prepares reports for state and federal agencies.
· Repairs and replaces all traffic signs in Geary County.
· Maintains an inventory of all signs and materials used to post signage along the county roads.
· Installs and maintains barricades and flasher lights for road and bridge construction.
· Purchases material for sign installation and maintenance.
· Maintains all records of sign placement and condition.
· Installs all traffic control devices.
· Researches the correct size and type of sign needed.
· Maintains equipment in working order.
Marginal Functions
· Performs flagperson duties when needed.
· Performs other equipment operator II functions for the department in driving a truck to and from job sites, helping with road construction, and snow plowing/snow removal operations.
Other Applicant Qualifications
· Willingness to reside within a 30 mile radius of worksite within 90 days of employment.
· Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas CDL driver’s license.
· Successful completion of drug screening.

Position Requirements
Experience: Two to three years experience in water/wastewater facility management and operation is required. Experience in sign installation and management may be learned on the job but prior experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position.
Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Requires Small Systems Water Treatment Certification and a Class I Wastewater Treatment Certification.
Skills: Thorough knowledge of water and wastewater testing equipment. Knowledge of chemical usage, storage and the ability to read and interpret label instructions. Knowledge of gases associated with wastewater treatment. Good mathematical aptitude. Thorough knowledge of the maintenance procedures for related equipment. Considerable knowledge of the Manual of Uniformed Traffic Control Devices. Knowledge of construction techniques. The ability to operate laboratory testing equipment, maintain accurate and complete records and record reporting. Ability to read and understand electrical schematics. Ability to operate pumps, chlorinators, blowers and electrical motors. Ability to build and repair barricades and signs. Ability to operate a post hole auger, drill press, hand tools and other related equipment. Ability to communicate in writing and orally. Ability to gather information for report preparation and to write reports.
Problem Solving: Extensive problem solving exists in this position. Problems include reactions of chemicals, changing feed rates to maintain balance, malfunctions of equipment and determining detour routes around construction projects.
Decision Making: Extensive decision making exists in this position. Decisions include determining how a piece of equipment needs to be repaired or if it needs to be replaced. When and where to place signs.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department but does participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Occasional supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the road and bridge supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relations: Occasional contact with other county departments and the general public.
