Festival Summary 2001

  • The 3rd powwow held by the Canadian National Powwow Society December 21 to 23, 2001
  • The powwow theme was “Celebrating Traditions and Cultures”. Events included the competition powwow, the Miss Teen Canada Princess, and an Arts and crafts display. 450 dancers and 25 drum groups participated (100 from the Edmonton area).
  • All volunteer run (more than 50 volunteers)
  • Paid attendance was established at just under 3,000 with 1,500 free admissions.
  • Average ticket price was $2.

Festival Plans 2003

  • The event will take place June 21 – 23, 2003 at the Shaw Conference Centre. This will be the 4th annual event.
  • In addition to dancing and drumming, activities will include hand games, a major art and craft’s show, a Beauty Pageant, a temporary teepee village and traditional and contemporary food. There will be a demonstration by the Crow people from the South Western United States.
  • Expected attendance: 6, 000 visitors, 750 dancers, 30 drum groups of 8 – 10 people. (7,020)

Summary of Jury Comments

In the opinion of the jury, the application was weak and the budget was unrealistic. The

jury expressed a lack of confidence that the event will take place as described in the

application. However, the jury recognizes the cultural merits of this event and wishes to

support it. The jury recommends that the organization work with the EAC Grants Officer

prior to next year’s application in order to better describe the activities and financial

status of the organization. The jury recommends that a grant be allocated to the Society

upon completion of the event.

Festival Summary 2002

  • The 18th Annual Cariwest Festival took place August 3rd, 9th, 10th and 11th.
  • The festival included The Calypso Show, the Friday Night Costume Extravaganza, a parade of bands along Jasper Avenue, Churchill Square Caribbean Village and the Saturday Night Fete. 115 performers in all with at least 90% from the greater Edmonton area.
  • The Calypso Show, the Costume Extravaganza and the Saturday Night dance sold tickets at an average price of $12. All other programming was free.
  • Estimated attendance for the four days of programming was 60,000
  • About 95 volunteers worked about 4,740 hours
  • The festival projects a loss on operations of $18,907 and an accumulated debt of $46,805.

Festival Plans 2003

  • The festival will take place on August 7, 8, 9 and 10.
  • New programming will include the Miss Cariwest Pageant, participation from three children’s Day Camps for costume workshops as well as music and outdoor dancing to conclude the festival on Sunday night. The Kiddies Carnival will be reinstated.
  • Attendance is projected at a 10 – 20% increase.

Festival Summary 2002

  • 2002 was the third annual Carnival of Souls Festival
  • Programming included Urban Tales Cabaret, House of Screams, Horror Film Fest with Metro Cinema and the Lantern March & Workshop.

The jury recognizes the merit of this proposal and wishes to support it. In addition, the jury felt that this event has potential to achieve full festival status and encourages the organization to develop partnerships and expanded marketing strategies.

In the opinion of the jury, the organization (Northern Light Theatre) appears to be in transition and future applications must demonstrate the distinctiveness of the event within the mandate of the organization. As was recommended last year, the jury strongly suggests that the organization consult with the EAC Grants Officer prior to applying for 2004 Arts and 2004 Festival Operating grants.

  • The Comedy Arts Festival was held January 18-27. It was the 3rd year of the Festival
  • The festival featured 50 Canadian artists, a comedian from New York and a European performance ensemble. 15 shows in 5 venues.
  • Collaborated with the Library, ESO, Alberta Opera Touring Association and the Street Performers Festival to present a broader selection of artistic styles and disciplines.
  • 65 active volunteers.
  • Attendance was estimated at 6,762.
  • Tickets ranged from $10 and $100. Average price is $15. There are discounts for students, seniors, artists & volunteers. There were 2 days of free family programming and a major public art exhibit.
  • The 2002 festival had a surplus on operations of $1,326.

Festival Plans 2004

  • The 5th annual Comedy Arts Festival will take place from January 16-25, 2004
  • Developing two new cabaret concepts and working to bring two major Canadian authors to the festival. Commissioning a new play by Trevor Schmidt and committed to a collaboration between Spymonkey (Europe) and One Yellow Rabbit (Calgary).
  • Projected attendance for 2004 is 7,000 at paid events.

  • The 2002 festival, “In Nature there is No Waste” was held April 21 at Hawrelak Park.
  • Programming included Earth Fair with Environmental, Peace, Human and Animal Rights Groups, Workshops, Drum Circle, Taoist Tai Chi Demonstration, an Essay contest and a food fair (all fresh, no chemicals, no preservatives). There were 33 performing artists (31 from Edmonton area).

There were no free events but the festival offered free admission to children under 12 and to seniors, reduced prices for children aged 12 - 17, and 1,500 free tickets to Social Service affiliated agencies
  • Total attendance was 78,000. Ticket price range was $12.50 - $35.
  • 1850 volunteers donated 50,000 hours of service.
  • The 2001 festival is projecting a deficit of $37,516.

Festival Plans 2003

  • The funds associated with this grant application will be applied towards the 2004 festival. Despite the allocation of funds from this application to the 2004 festival, the application describes the 2003 festival as the upcoming festival. This is consistent with applications in past years from Local Heroes.
  • The 17th annual festival will be held March 7 –15, 2003. This is the first year the festival will be presented under the new name.
  • Programming will be categorized into 15 distinct streams: Galas & Special Event Screenings, Retrospective, Spotlight (Canada), Spotlight (Edmonton), Canadian Shorts, Cinema of Today, World Cinema, Edge of Night, The Documentary Series and Committee’s Choices. New this Year will be Canadian Film Studies Series, Edmonton International Children’s Film Festival and a Post –Festival Tour. The video Competition will now be called ‘Local Heroes’ and the Delegate Street Hockey Game will take place again.
  • Projected attendance is 10,350.
