Rebuilding the top gears of the Venture Mfg. Landing Jack
Over time the landing jacks become sluggish and the motor sounds stressed due to the jack gears being worn, the jack bent or the internal parts lacking grease. Repairing and rebuilding the jack is not that difficult.
You may contact Venture Mfg at 937-233-8792 to order parts or if you have questions.
The top gear rebuild kit is part 999-00 ($50).
Very nice and helpful people.
Repairing and Rebuilding the jack leg
Here is a picture of the parts included in 999-00 rebuild kit
1 – Drive shaft bushing
2 – Drive shaft
3 – E-clip
4 – Drive shaft bushing
5 – Vertical gear
6 – Roll pin (for vertical gear)
7 – Shim washer
8 – Horzontal gear (larger)
9 – Jack screw pin (goes under Horizontal gear)
Disassembly
- Remove the jack leg from the RV.
- Remove the cap on top of the leg. Carefully pry off with screwdriver. Do not bend it as you will reuse it.
- Rotate and position the leg so the long shaft is to your left and the right side of the leg will have no shaft protruding. Position the leg so you can see down into the top of the leg.
- There is a vertical gear on the right side inside of the leg. Rotate the shaft until you see a small roll pin going through the gear. This pin holds the gear in place on the shaft. Use a punch and hammer and pound out the pin and discard. It will fall onto the Centering Plate but you can tip the leg up to allow the pin to fall out. You may have to wipe away some grease so you can see the pin.
- On the left side where the shaft exits the leg there is a retaining clip (E-clip) next to the bushing on the inside of the leg. Remove it and discard.
- You can now slide the shaft to the left out of the leg and the vertical gear should release as well as the two shaft bushings on both insides of the leg. Discard all these parts.
- Once the shaft is removed you will see the lower horizontal gear. Lift it up and discard.
- Once the horizontal gear is removed you will see a small pin through the top of the jack screw. Remove it and the washer below the pin. Discard these parts.
Before reassembling the top of the leg you should decide if you need to work on the jack screw. If so read that section.
Parts in picture (this is after I had re-greased all the new parts)
1 - Outer leg
2 - Roll pin
3 - Vertical gear
4 - Horzontal gear (larger)
5 - Drive shaft bushing
6 - Drive shaft
Reassembly
- Install the new washer on top of the jack screw and insert the new pin.
- Grease the new horizontal gear with Extreme pressure grade 2 grease and seat on top of the jack screw. Rotate so the groove in the bottom of the gear seats on the pin. Tap with a hammer in needed.
- Insert the new shaft through the right side of the leg. Note the right side is the bulged out side. As you insert the shaft you will have to thread in through the new right side bushing, vertical gear (grease it first) and left side bushing. Be sure the bushings are seated to the inside of the legs.
- Rotate the shaft if needed to align the slot in the vertical gear with the hole in the shaft. Insert the new roll pin and pound in until flush with the edge of the gear.
- Install the new E-clip to the left inside of the leg around the shaft next to the bushing. This E-clip must be snapped completely in place so the shaft does not work lose.
- Replace the top cap.
- If you are not doing any work on the lower leg jack screw you are done and ready to re-install in the RV.
