Hardtop

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.  Remove the hardtop-to-windshield frame screws.

2.  Remove the hardtop-to-rear quarter panel bolts.

3.  Disconnect the dome lamp.

4.  Lift the top from the Jeep, being careful to avoid damage to the foam seals.

5.  Installation is the reverse of removal.

1.  Remove the front crossmember cover, if so equipped.

2.  Remove the screws securing the radiator and shroud to the radiator grille guard panel.

3.  Remove the bolts securing the guard panel to the fenders.

4.  Remove the grille-to-frame crossmember holddown assembly, keeping track of the sequence of parts.

5.  Loosen the radiator support rods-to-grille guard support bracket nuts.

6.  Remove the rods from the brackets.

7.  Tilt the grille panel forward and disconnect the electrical wiring at the headlamp sealed beam unit and parking lamp assembly wiring harness at the connectors.

8.  If your Jeep has air conditioning:

A.  Discharge the system as described in Section 1.

B.  Disconnect the high pressure hose at the sight glass. Immediately cap both openings!

C.  Connect the high pressure hose at the compressor. Immediately cap both openings!

9.  Lift the grille from the vehicle.

10.  Position the grille panel and connect the electrical wiring at the headlamp sealed beam unit and parking lamp assembly wiring harness at the connectors.

11.  If your Jeep has air conditioning:

A.  Connect the high pressure hose at the compressor.

B.  Connect the high pressure hose at the sight glass.

C.  Charge the system as described in Section 1.

12.  Install the rods on the brackets.

13.  Tighten the radiator support rods-to-grille guard support bracket nuts.

14.  Install the grille-to-frame crossmember holddown assembly.

15.  Install the bolts securing the guard panel to the fenders.

16.  Install the screws securing the radiator and shroud to the radiator grille guard panel.

17.  Install the front crossmember cover, if so equipped.

1.  Remove or disconnect all items attached to the fender apron.

2.  Disconnect the wiring at the marker light.

3.  Remove the rocker panel molding on models through 1986.

4.  Remove the bolts attaching the fender and brace to the firewall.

5.  Remove the bolts attaching the fender to the grille panel.

6.  Pull the fender out and lift it from the Jeep.

7.  Installation is the reverse of removal.

1.  Remove any auxiliary lighting.

2.  Remove the bolts and nuts attaching the bumper to the frame extensions.

3.  Remove the bumper.

4.  Installation is the reverse of removal.

1.  Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the bumpers to the frame.

2.  Remove the bumpers.

3.  Installation is the reverse of removal.

Scrambler

1.  Disconnect the license plate wiring at the connectors.

2.  Unbolt and remove the bumper from the mounting arms.

3.  Unbolt and remove the mounting arms from the frame.

Swingout Spare Tire Carrier

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.  Remove the tire from the carrier.

2.  Remove the hinge pin nuts and bolts.

3.  Support the carrier. Unlatch the handle from the latch bracket and remove the carrier and hinge spacer washers.

4.  Remove the pin attaching the latch handle to the carrier and remove the handle, spring and washer.

5.  Installation is the reverse of removal.

Roll Bar

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

NOTE: The following procedures apply only to factory-installed roll bars. Aftermarket roll bars may differ significantly!

Through 1986 Models

NOTE: Torx® fasteners are used.

1.  Remove the left front seat.

2.  Remove the hardtop, or, fold the soft top back.

3.  Tilt the right front seat forward.

4.  Remove any carpeting.

5.  Remove the roll bar-to-body bolts.

6.  Using a heat gun, such as tool J-25070 or equivalent, heat the area around the mounting brackets to soften the sealer.

7.  Align the bolt holes before installation. Use new sealer. Don't tighten any of the bolts until they all are installed and the assembly is aligned.

Hood

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

All Models

1.  Matchmark the hinges and mounting panels.

2.  Disconnect the underhood light wire.

3.  Unbolt the hood from the hinges.

4.  Remove the hood prop rod, prop rod retainer clip, side catch brackets, windshield bumpers and footman loop.

5.  Assembly and installation is the reverse of removal and disassembly. Check hood alignment

Liftgate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
CJ-7

NOTE: Torx® fasteners are used in this procedure.

CAUTION
Never remove the liftgate supports with the liftgate closed! The supports are under considerable spring tension! After removal, never attempt to disassemble the supports!

1.  Open and support the liftgate.

2.  Disconnect the defogger wiring.

3.  Remove the liftgate-to-supports screws and fold the supports downward.

4.  Remove the hinges-to-liftgate screws and lift off the liftgate.

5.  Installation is the reverse of removal. Check alignment.
