Newsletter 18 Friday 23rdth March

Dear all

Reminder - Calculations policy eveningThursday 29th March 6- 7pm

I have included a response slip on the newsletter. If you are hoping to attend please complete the slip and return it to school by Tuesday. We hope parents take this opportunity to find out about the strategies used to teach calculations in the school. The Calculations policy is now on the school’s website along with a parents’ booklet.

Non-uniform day Friday 30th March

The previous head teacher of the school, Richard Burbage, is planning to run the London Marathon to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The charity is attempting to find a cure for youngsters with diabetes. The school wants to support Richard by holding a non-uniform day Friday 30th March. Children can pay 50p and wear their casual clothes. Good luck Richard with the marathon!

Horstead Residential

Class 4 are away at Horstead next week – we wish them a great 3 days.

Reflections of the CASMA concert byClass 4

‘It wasan early Monday morning when we had our practice in the medieval St Andrew’s Hall. The windows were astounding and our voices echoed against the cobbled stone walls. We returned in the evening, our voices shaking in nervousness. As we filed onto the stage the hall was filled with our angelic voices, so I was told! It was a spine chilling experience but so many things were going through my mind; I would never forget this astounding day!’

Becky Dowrick

‘I sat in the majestic domed hall, looking around me in awe! With ten songs to rehearse in what felt like twenty minutes, how were we ever going to finish this? The morning had started with a quick run-through of the songs. We had warm up exercises to help our voices, accompanied by an excellent pianist. The tunes came pretty easily; it was the words we struggled with! The nervous group of school children waited in silence, hearts beating a tango! The first song went smoothly and the audience sang along in their heads! The day was a tuneful success!’

Charlotte Vincent

It was Monday evening. Already parents were streaming into the grand hall. I stood with the rest of the school nervously waiting. I think everyone shared the same fear as I did. We got to the stage and stood to sing our first song. The look on the faces of the audience was great! I realised that we were hitting the right notes and at the end of the song, the audience broke into wild applause! The rest of the songs went fantastically and by the end of the performance I was feeling ten foot tall! I’m sure everyone had as good a time as I did!’

ECO schools

The school has submitted its Green Flag application and is waiting for an inspection date! The school completed a successful waste week looking at the amount of waste generated by school dinners. It can be hard to visualise just how much waste a school produces, but the average primary schoolproduces 45kg per pupil each year! The children can still enter the prize poster competition – drawing a poster that encourages families to recycle items in our new colourful recycling unit. The deadline is Thursday 29th.

ECO club have also been busy building several insect homes to encourage insects – these are placed behind our mobiles.

Fund raising event – Mrs Howard

‘I have decided to raise money for Nelson’s Journey, a charity which provides support to bereaved children. I will be having a cake stall at school Friday 20th April. Children can bring some money in to buy cakes which will be priced at about 25p. The following Friday, as part of the Swimathon weekend, I will attempt to swim 5km, or 200 lengths in under 2 hours.’

Finally the school children had so much fun yesterday with the Egg Drop challenge! Fifty five children entered the competition – slightly more than half survived the drop without cracking! The different designs were brilliant! In the final assembly this term prizes will be given to each class for the most creative and effect designs! Photographs can shortly be found on the school website.

Best Wishes
