Fed Lands FY16-17 Objectives:

  • Assess and improve inventory completeness.
  • Assess and improve core attribute compatibilitybetween agency datasets.
  • Improve the efficiency of annual fed lands data aggregationfor PAD-US.
  • Identify, manage oreditmajor topology overlap errors(boundaries)between agency datasets.

June 1st Action

  • Lisa/Maddie -Add all 2016 call notes to internal page. Pending
  • Lisa –Send “Parks Report” and Summary prospectus for FLWG review by July 15th. Done.
  • Ron/Sean – Documented PAD-US automation process for others, will share. Pending.
  • Lisa – follow up with NCED regarding easement data maintainence. In progress.
  • Bob – date of next DOI GAC meeting. In progress.

Final June 1st Agenda

Participation list, intros, updates (Lisa/All)

  • Official PAD-US 1.4 now available from USGS PAD-US Website:
  • Updates to PAD-USViewer, WMS and Website in process:
  • USGS announcements, press release, overview webinar coming soon (early July).

USFWS automates translation of data files to PAD-US format (Sean/Roger/Ron)

  • Built from NPS FME translation scripts, worked with Roger week of May 23rd
  • 3 days
  • FME similar to model builder
  • Helped to identify inconsistencies between NPS and FWS translation, helped to align definitions in PAD-US. Helpful to both Parks and Fish.
  • Draft geodatabase, in multiple feature class format sent to GAP for review (in progress)
  • Translated into 2.0 schema
  • Documented process for future, workflow for others to use
  • Share copy of process

Three year PAD-US Initiative (Larry/Lisa)

  • Geospatial Data for all Public Parks and Open Space Areas – A review and action plan
  • Webinar, Q&A today
  • Draftdiscussion reportand summary prospectussent via email to follow
  • Describes the need for a national inventory of public parks and protected areas
  • Action plan and funding section is for discussion only, not endorsed by USGS at this time.
  • RESPONSE needed!
  • Please provide feedback by July 15th here:
  • Looking for broad themes and ideas, particularly regarding users, collaborators, funding opportunities, as well as your general opinion and recommendations on next steps.

BACKGROUND - What's this all about?
The Centers for Disease Control and the National Park Service have asked the USGS Gap Analysis Program (GAP) to develop an assessment of and an action plan for a GIS inventory of all public parks and open space lands in America. This report is being prepared by GAP and the nonprofit GreenInfo Network.
The action plan focuses on how to further develop the existingProtected Areas Database of the U.S. (PAD-US), published by USGS GAP. PAD-US isintended to have complete GIS data on all levels of park and related open space lands in the nation, and, in collaboration with other efforts, is likely to achieve this by the end of 2019 - already it has all federal and most state lands, plus local and regional park and open space lands for a number of states.
But to enact such a plan requires more engagement from more of those who have a stake in this data - not just conservationists, but also outdoor recreation interests, public health advocates and researchers, and many more. The report we are developing specifically defines standards, objectives and directions that PAD-US has to move toward to fully serve this wide range of users.
The webinars will orient you to PAD-US in relation to public health, conservation and recreation, and to its relationship to all of the many related initiatives going on today. Immediately after the webinars, we will circulate the paper for your comments and suggestions. The webinars are very important for the report context, but if you can't make it, we will of course send you the draft paper.
Thanks for consideringthis, we welcome your participation in this conversation.

Lisa Johnson, USGS GAP Cooperator, PAD-US Coordinator

NOTES:

Fire needs state data, some local gov lands (esp California for fire jurisdiction)

Ryan (BLM) – state offices in eastern states interested in exploring differences in data

Follow up on NCED easements – NPS only easements, how to ensure old easements ‘cleaned out’. Complete replacement of fed land easements.

April 27th Action

  • Lisa/Maddy – post next meeting date, full fact sheet, March and April Call notes. DONE.
  • Need summary paragraph from agencies re translation for DOI GAC in June/July (Troy, Ron, Roger, Michele, Ryan/Fran/Nancy). Pending.

□Bob will check date

  • Register for GeoPlatform Community page (all). Pending.

June 17th National Geospatial Data Summit at USGS (Reston) – Bob will follow up with call/meeting in info

Schedule next call: Wed, June 29th (3-4 EST)– note new time!

-Review USFS, NPS, FWS, USBR?, BLM?PAD-US automation summary for DOI GAC meeting (Troy, Sean, Ron, Roger, Ryan/Fran/Nancy, Michele, Lisa, Doug, Bob)

-Discuss PAD-US strategy tech report and prospectus (Larry, Lisa)

-Who are LCCs, where do they fit in the world (Lisa, Bob, invite LCC rep – short 10 mins)

TOPICS for Future Calls:
