COUNSELLOR, WORKING WITH CHILDREN/YOUNG PEOPLE

PLACE OF WORK: Relate Centre, authorised outposts or schools

ACCOUNTABILITY: - Centre Manager/Service Manager and the

In-service Clinical Manager

1. Dimensions of the Job

The counsellor will work as a member of the Relate Dorset and South Wiltshire team to deliver a counselling service to children/young people aged 6-18 who need support as a result of aproblemor anxiety. As a member of the team he/she will both contribute to and benefit from a structured organisational context, designed to facilitate the delivery of an effective and safe service for children/young people. The Centre works in collaboration with schools, CAMHS and other specialised agencies, to ensure that clients are offered the most appropriate forms of assistance.

In order to remain an effective counsellor with children/ young people, each practitioner will commit to and engage with any appropriate training organised by the Centre and in ongoing individual and group supervision.

Some contracts may require term time delivery and in these cases when offered work it is important that practitioners are aware and prepared to deliver the service during term times.

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 To work at times and places reasonably requested by the Relate Dorset and South Wiltshire. To accept necessary variations in these and not to work at

unauthorised times or places that have not been agreed or approved by the management.To participate as required in training courses and conferences appropriate to the scope of the work.

2.2To assist with the ongoing marketing of the service by making contact with other specialised agencies and professionals and by talking to children/young people in schools.

2.3To attend both individual and group supervision sessions and to

prepare and engage in them.

2.4 To comply with Relate’s requirements regarding the confidentiality of

information about the children/young people who use the service, to keep adequate and confidential records of the counselling and support work and to provide information to the Centre Management as required.

2.5 To comply with the Codes of Practice recommended by Relate and

with legislation relating to the care and protection of children/young people. To work in every respect so as to maintain the standards and reputation of Relate

2.6 To adhere to Relate’s Equal Opportunities Policy and anti-

discriminatory practice. To collaborate, when appropriate, with other

Centre personnel in the application of the Complaints, Disciplinary or

Grievance Procedures in the interests of clients.

2.7 To be ready to account for activity as a counsellor to the Centre Manager,

Service Manager or Clinical Manager.

2.8 To implement agreed changes in procedures as a result of either

changes in legislation, Relate policy or following evaluation.

2.9 To make recommendations and to assist with the ongoing development

of the service.

3. Terms and Conditions

3.1 Experienced counsellor with a specific qualification in Children and Young People’s Counselling.

3.2 Depending on the work available we will discuss individual contracts or agreements with applicants at interview.
