Reimbursement claims for monitored dose systems

supplied to patients

formally assessed as requiring a monitored dose system

NHS Lanarkshire agree to reimburse community pharmacists for monitored dose systems supplied to patients who have been formally assessed by the pharmacist as having an identified need for such a system.

Guidance on the assessment process is available via

In general, patients who require an MDS will be receiving chronic medication. It is therefore ideal if the patients can be registered for CMS and if the outcome of their assessment for the need for a monitored dose system is recorded on the patients care record.

While we acknowledge that there may be some patients who have received MDS systems for many years and commenced this before formal recording of the need was expected, we now have PCR systems in place which readily allow explanation of why the pharmacist has chosen to dispense a patients medicines in an MDS system. This was first recommended in February 2011 and claims for patients receiving this type of dispensing should now acknowledge that such a record has been established.
