Regional Mini-Summit on Social Change

accessAbilities, a nonprofit organization that provides home- and community-based services for children and adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, is co-sponsoring a Regional Mini-Summit on Social Change for Indiana and Armstrong counties, in conjunction with the Three Rivers Community Foundation. The summit will be held on Saturday, April 17 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s HadleyUnionBuilding from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration and parking are free, and morning coffee and pastries and lunch will be provided. The event is open to all residents of Indiana and Armstrong counties.

The purpose of the summit is to increase communication, collaboration, and synergies among organizations throughout the region, and to provide a forum for discussion ofthe most urgent social, economic, and environmental issues, as well as identifying actions to address these problems. Topics will include disability issues, economic and racial justice, women’s rights, family and community concerns, environmental justice, and more. Participants will learn about community organizing, building sustainable organizations, use of media, marketing, and social networking, legislative advocacy, and fundraising.

The Open Door Announcements

Reality Tour

Follow the intimate journey of a fictitious teen addicted to heroin. Witness the emotional turmoil and grief caused by using drugs and learn how your family can begin crucial conversations about the risks and dangers of substance abuse. The Indiana County Reality Tour is held the 2nd Wednesday of EVERY month starting at 6:00 p.m. at the new Indiana County Jail. Youth participating will receive a gift for coming. Each parent will receive a bag of information on how to talk to their teens about drugs. PARENTS REGISTER NOW. The Open Door Family Education Support Group

Job Search Workshop

The PA CareerLink Indiana County will begin offering a Job Search Workshop on Tuesday’s beginning April 6, 2010at9:00 AM. Sam Caridi and Mallie Stephens will be the staff assigned to the workshop presentations. Topics for this weekly workshop will include information on partner services and programs, labor market information, training and job search information.

The target group for the Tuesday workshop will be non PREP unemployment claimants but the workshop will be open to all job seekers including veterans, volunteers and client referrals from partner agencies. *April 15, 2010 - Lets Talk for Girls and Mothers A class discussing peer pressure,

growing up, physical changes and respect and empathy for both sexes. Class is $15 per child and will be conducted at IRMCOutpatientBuilding, Classroom A&B from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Class will be led by a female instructor.

*April 17 and April 24, 2010 – ABC’s of Babysitting This is a 2 day program for students 12 years and up. Class will be conducted at IRMCOutpatientBuilding, Class- room A&B from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The cost is $50.

*April 21, 2010 – Doctor DadA FREE class for fathers to learn “The Basics” to

promote health, identify and treat illness and prevent injury. While the workshop targets infant and toddlers health, fathers will learn skills that they can build on as their child grows. Class is from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the IRMC Private Dining Room #1.

Overview of Services

The Indiana County Department of Human Services will be offering the FREE“Overview of Services” session on Wednesday, April 21st, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Indiana County Children and Youth Services, 350 North 4th Street, Indiana. The Veterans Affairs of Indiana County will be hosting a“Van Fundraiser” event on Saturday, April 24, 2010at the Indiana Elks Lodge #931, 475 South 13th Street, Indiana. “Into the Streets”

The IUP Office of Service Learning is again sponsoring its annual “Into the Streets” day of service. The date for this event is Saturday, April 24, 2010. “Into the Streets” is a national project that encourages university members to participate in the local community’s outreach services. This exciting program provides students with an introductory service experience while also supporting an ongoing involvement in community service affairs.

We are asking Indiana human service agencies to identify a project that may be completed by IUP students on April 24, 2010. Examples of past projects include: tree planting/landscaping, fundraising, conducting clean up efforts, painting, and offering services to the aged or physically challenged.

We welcome any projects from your agency; however in order to better prepare our students for their project with your agency, please provide a detailed description (ie. type of work, necessary attire, etc.) in the "Additional Comments" section of the application. Student starting times are dependant upon the needs of the agency and can be discussed with the Office of Service Learning. It’s timefor the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year’s 24-hour, sports-themed, event will be held at the White Township Recreation Complex on Friday, May 14, 2010 beginning at 6:00 PM, and ending on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 6:00 PM.

Meet the Grantmakers

"Meet the Grantmakers", sponsored by the Human Services Council of Indiana County, will be held on May 13th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A panel of grantmakers will speak about available funds from foundations that serve our area; the panel will include representatives from Grantmakers of Western PA, Staunton Farm Foundation, Community Foundation of the Alleghenies, Women and Girls Foundation and FISA Foundation.

The JimmyStewartMuseum invites your participation in the Airport/Museum Festival 2010 scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A day of fun activities is planned for both the Airport and the Museum. The Museum is seeking requests from Civic, Service and Church groups doing fund raising activities to set up a booth or table at the Museum and CourthousePlaza. Brochure Rack Available

Adagio Health/WIC has a used brochure rack that they are willing to donate to an agency. Anyone interested in it can call the number below to make arrangements to check it out.

The rack is 4feet wide, 4 feet 2 inches high, and 2 feet deep. There are 42 sections that are 8” long and 3 inches wide. There are 2 large drawers at the bottom. Ask for the Indiana WIC office by calling 1-866-942-2778.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

CSFP provides monthly, nutritious food packages to seniors (60+) who are at or below 130% of federal poverty guidelines. The monthly box of food includes four vegetables, two fruits, three juices, meat products, non meat products, carbohydrate, milk product, cereal and a two pound block of cheese.

IndianaCounty 4-H Plat Book

Penn State Cooperative Extension and the IndianaCounty 4-H program announce the publication of the new IndianaCounty 4-H Plat Book. (The last Plat Book was printed in 1991.) A plat book is an index with maps that show landowners of the county (over five acres), and it used by people in gas/oil, forestry, agricultural, and related service areas. The cost is $40. Books are available for purchase at the Penn State Extension Office, 827 Water St.; Register and Recorder and Data Processing offices in the County Courthouse; Nichol Lumber and Supply, Hillsdale; Farm Service Agency, 1432 Rt. 286 Hwy E, Indiana, and Indiana County Conservation District, 625 Kolter Drive, Suite 8, Indiana.
