Regional Council Summit – Congratulations to Allison Bungard!
2011 Regional Summit iPad winner!!!
We had a great time at the Regional Summit this year in Los Angeles for our State Council Directors and Director-Elects. Although the weather was challenging, bringing us rain and cold weather, it was still a fun and productive weekend. There was lots of best practice sharing and the State Council Directors were able to receive updates from several SHRM departments and interact with SHRM’s senior management. Everyone received raffle tickets to win prizes by completing the pre-work, sharing a best practice or participating in an activity. Congratulations to Allison Bungard, State Council Director for West Virginia, winner of an iPad. Allison shared with the group that this was timely because she needed an iPad to help her son’s education. Understanding how important the iPad was to her made it more special to have Allison win!! Thank you to the HR Certification Institute for donating the iPad.
Membership:
2011 Membership Goals
The SHRM in-chapter membership goal is 3%. In addition, chapters are asked to track retention (if not already). The goal for 2011 is 80%. Refer to the Membership section of the Volunteer Leader Resource Center (VLRC) for resources to assist in meeting these goals at
The Membership Star/Superstar program will remain the same for 2011. This program recognizes chapters that have exceeded the 3% goal. Chapters attaining 6-9.9% in-chapter SHRM membership growth will be recognized as stars and above 10% in-chapter growth as superstars.
Virtual Membership Summit
As an extension of the Membership Summit held in conjunction with last year’s Leadership Conference, a series of webinars have been developed to equip chapter membership directors with information helpful to meet in-chapter membership goals. The first webinar on membership basics provides foundational information for new membership directors. It will be recorded and available soon on the VLRC.Watch for additional information.
FYI:
SHRM® Assurance of Learning Assessment for Graduates of HR Degree Programs
SHRM’s Assurance of Learning is the new universal benchmark for graduate and undergraduate level HR students. The Assurance of Learning assessment will help distinguish students applying for entry-level HR positions. When a student passes the exam they receive a certificate of learning informing hiring managers that they have sufficient knowledge to enter the workforce. Registration opens this month for the May 15-June 15 testing window. Hiring managers can expect to start seeing this achievement on recent graduates’ resumes starting summer 2011.Visit for more information.

Reminder! Review your Chapter’s Bylaws annually and update as needed
Bylaws are the foundation of an overall sound governance structure for your chapter. An annual review conducted by your chapter board or designee ensures your policy and practices are in alignment. In the year-end SHAPE report, you will be asked to verify that you have completed your review and if changes are required, have either begun or completed the update process. Unless you are proposing amendments to the bylaws, you do NOT need to submit your bylaws to SHRM. However, keep in mind that all amendments must be approved by SHRM prior to a ratification vote by your chapter. You can find the chapter bylaws template at:
