Regional Performing Company and Ensemble 2013 Information Package

Within the Illawarra/ South East Region there are 2 major Performing Groups, the Regional Performing Ensemble and the Regional Performing Company.

Regional Performing Ensemble is a touring group of performers, stage band, dance and vocal, presenting a cabaret style show to schools and parent and community groups.

The Ensemble tours and performs in various public schools once a term over 3 days. There are sometimes special performances requested of the group which require additional night or daytime commitment.

Rehearsal schedule is a 3 day camp early in the year and then a rehearsal (usually a Sunday) prior to each tour commencing.

There is a fee paid each term through the year to cover camp, touring costs and other expenses such as uniform. This fee is payable by cheque or cash.

Regional Performing Company is a group of performers consisting of contemporary dance, drama, vocal, core choir and instrumental, selected from audition as possible featured artists for Southern Stars.

Performers from the Company can be asked to perform at special Department of Education and Community events, but their main focus each year is Southern Stars. There may be other performance opportunities offered throughout the year.

Rehearsals are usually outside school hours and some scheduled school days prior to events. Southern Stars, Dance Festival, Drama Festival and Schools Spectacular require a commitment over a number of school days.

There is an annual Company fee of $125. A compulsory Company uniform shirt worn at rehearsals and events will need to be purchased at an additional $25. Additional costs are incurred for all performers with other costumes and travel to rehearsals and events.

A Southern Stars Camp is held in the July School holidays, a daily fee of $60 is an additional cost that will be incurred by successful auditionees.

The Company performers complete their commitment at an end of year concert for parents, friends and members of the public.

Please nominate any student worthy of audition for: Stageband, Orchestra, Drama(years 5-8) as well as Solo Instrumentalists, Vocalist or Dancers.

Selected Vocalists will be in designated groups. Core Choir, Ensembles, Backing Vocalist and Featuring Vocalist.

Core Choir – students who audition as a vocalist will also be auditioning for selection in the Core Choir (Regional Choir). The Core Choir will be featured vocalists within the Mass Choir for Southern Stars 2013.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST PERFORM A LIVE AUDITION.

Auditions will be scheduled outside the Illawarra area for vocalists, dancers and instrumentalists if there are sufficient numbers of applicants. This will be advised after the due date for application to audition. Please encourage students from the outer metropolitan area of the Illawarra to apply.

Further auditions may be scheduled in the 2013 school year for newly located talented students in the region, students who are unavailable through extreme circumstances, and for vacant roles which have not been filled through audition in 2012. Additional auditions will occur in 2013 for needed performance skills which may arise through the development of the Southern Stars show, e.g. tap dancers.

Special Notes:

Any PS or HS student may nominate to audition for the Core Choir, and we will schedule these singers as part of the Vocal audition processes.

Other PS or HS singers may be specifically targeted from their Vocal audition, and given an invitation to attend a workshop early in 2013 to be considered for the Core Choir. The Core Choir will perform as appropriate at such events as Education Week, Southern Stars, scheduled community events, and if possible at any scheduled State event for Regional Choirs.

The Performing Ensemble is only open to students from year 7 to 11 in 2013

Instrumental Auditions

Wednesday, 31st October 2013

Instrumental auditions are for positions in Performing Ensemble and/or Performing Company (including Southern Stars Orchestra and possible Featured Instrumentalists).

Open to students in ISE Regional schools from year 7 to 12 and TAFE in year 2013.

The Performing Ensemble is only open to students from year 7 to 11 in 2013.

Audition Venue: Wollongong Conservatorium of Music

Times: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Audition process: Auditions will occur through live performance of a piece of free choice designed to demonstrate the performers ability and range of style, 2 mins maximum. The audition should demonstrate a prepared performance. It need not be from the start of the selected piece. If required, the auditionee may be asked to perform a short sight reading excerpt to gauge their ability. Amplifiers will not be provided, but a Drum Kit and Piano will be available. Students absent through extreme circumstances may be asked to attend the Ensemble Camp OR Orchestra Workshop as their call-back.

PLEASE NOTE: The Ensemble is only STAGEBAND INSTRUMENTS: trumpet/trombone/saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone)/keys/guitar/bass guitar/ kit.

Any selected performers for the Regional Performing Ensemble will be required to attend a 3 day camp (1 school day only) early in Term 1 2013.

Distance students – There may be a possibility of travelling auditions. Please do not be discouraged by distance. If there are a number of students from your area, then we may be able to come to you. You will be advised prior to the audition date if this is the case.

Drama Auditions (Years 5-8 students only)

Wednesday 31st October: 3:30pm till 5:30 pm

The Drama Group will be formed from students in years 5, 6, 7 and 8 only. Please note: Rehearsals for the group will occur prior to events for performance such as the Regional Drama Festival in Term 2, the State Drama Festival (through selection) in term 4.

Audition Venue: Albion Park High School – Performing Arts Hall

Times: Individual times will be scheduled after forms are received. They will be advised on the website www.rasouth.net and southernstars.nsw.edu.au

Audition process: Audition will occur through individual presentations of 1minute max, free choice, no costumes or props. An unseen partner dialogue will take place during the audition day. Students will be required for a maximum of half an hour on the day.

Vocal Auditions - years 7-12 in 2013 (Yr 12 2013 audition Tues afternoon)

Monday 29th October, 2012

Vocal auditions are held for placed in the Performing Ensemble and/or the Performing Company (Southern Stars).

Open to students in ISE Regional schools from year 7 to 12 and TAFE in year 2013.

The Performing Ensemble is only open to students from year 7 to 11 in 2013. (See Pg 6)

Audition Venue: Smiths Hill High School – upstairs in Citadel

Times: Monday 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, Ensemble Callbacks 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Times will be advised on the website www.rasouth.net and southernstars.nsw.edu.au

Audition process: Auditions will occur through live performance of a piece of free choice designed to show the singer’s ability, 2 mins maximum, with backing to best show the singer’s pitching with an accompaniment. No costumes or props, but the audition should demonstrate a prepared performance. It need not be from the start of the selected piece.

Vocal call-back for Performing Ensemble - By notification only

Monday 1st October, 2012 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

The High school students to participate in this selection process will be notified as they audition on Monday 1st October. They must be available for this call-back if they wish to be considered for the Ensemble. Students absent through extreme circumstances may be asked to attend the Ensemble Camp as their call-back.

Times: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Audition process: Selection through a group workshop and presentation, with singers being taught harmonies and choreography to present.

Dance Auditions – Primary School

Thursday 1st November, 2012

Dance auditions are for 2013 Primary school dancers.

Open to students in ISE Regional schools from K-6 in year 2013.

Audition Venue: Croome Rd Sporting Complex, Albion Park Rail

Cost: $2 per student on entry to cover hire of venue

Times: 8:00am to 11.30 am

Please note: Current year 6 students are to audition with the High school students for inclusion in the 2013 Company.

Audition process: Selection through a choreographed workshop taught to the students on the day. Please bring along a copy of your application form
