Geometry Syllabus

Expectations

FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL RULES!

Be prepared for class everyday! Textbook, notebook, homework, pencil, calculator, and student agenda are needed everyday.

Be on time! Anyone not in the classroom when the bell rings is tardy. Any student tardy for class 3 times will receive an after-school detention.

Homework is to be completed every night!

Participate in class! Notes are to be taken each day carefully and completely. Make sure you ask questions and answer questions when called upon.

Be respectful! Listen when the teacher or other students are talking. Do not speak when others are talking. Always refer to others in a respectful manner.

Students will not be permitted to wait at the door at the end of class. There will be certain days students will be permitted to change seats and work with others.

Textbooks should be covered at all times. Points will be deducted for an uncovered textbook.

If at any time a student fails to understand the work being covered, it is their responsibility to seek extra help. Extra help will be provided during F.I.R.E period. Before and after school help can also be arranged.

Supplies

A scientific calculator is required! Prices range from $5-$20.

A notebook, kept separate from all other classes, is required. This notebook will be used for daily notes.

A loose-leaf folder with pockets, kept separate from all other classes, is required. This folder will be used to keep worksheets, important handouts, quizzes, tests, this syllabus, and any other handouts. Nothing is to be thrown away from this course.

Pencil: Failure to use pencil will result in ½ credit on any homework, quizzes, tests, or any other assignment. There will be certain times when students will be instructed to use a pen to grade or correct assignments. Otherwise, Always Use A Pencil. (Make sure both a pencil and a pen are brought to class!)

Colored pencils are not required. However, they might be rewarding to have in class.

Homework

Homework is a vital part of any math class. Students learn math by doing sample problems, not by merely watching the teacher.

Most homework assignments will be graded with completion points. Wrong answers will not count against students as long as the effort to complete the assignment has been made.

5 points = Every problem assigned is completed and ALL work is shown.

3 points = More than half of the problems assigned are completed and

ALL work is shown.

0 points = The homework is not completed, less than half of the problems

assigned are completed, or there is no work shown.

The homework that is not graded for completion points will be graded for correct answers and usually consists of more than 5 points. ALL work must still be shown for full points. This homework is usually assigned once you become familiar with the chapter content.

Homework is to be completed in pencil only. Any homework not completed in pencil will result with ½ credit.

Make sure name appears on each assignment. Any assignment with no name will result with a zero.

Be neat! Any assignment not legible will result with a zero.

There will be many days where there is time left at the end of the period to start your homework. Unless otherwise stated, students are to remain in their seats working quietly. Questions are always welcome. Any student who completes and turns in the assignment before the bell rings will receive 2 extra points for the assignment. This will hopefully encourage all students to stay busy and ask questions.

Late work will not be accepted unless students have an excused absence. If the absence is unexcused, or a student is suspended from school, an automatic zero will result.

Students can also earn homework passes. Homework passes might come with A’s on tests, completing every assignment throughout a chapter, winning a review game, and more. Be prepared for every opportunity.

Aleks Program

Throughout the course of this year, each student will be required to complete an

8th grade program and a Geometry program on their own

personal Aleks accounts. This will be a lengthy process and students will be

given certain deadlines. Some class time will be given to work on the

programs, but the majority will have to be completed outside of class.

Therefore, students must have access to the internet in order to complete

these assignments. If this is not possible, please speak with Ms. Hartman as

soon as possible to arrange time for school computers to be used.

Notebooks

Students will take notes on a regular basis. Notes should be kept in a notebook, not on loose paper. Students will take 4-6 notebook quizzes per grading period.

Use the following guidelines when taking notes:

Start on a clean sheet of paper each day.

The date and chapter with section number should appear at the top of each set of notes.

Include all relevant examples.

Include all definitions and symbols.

Use color or underlining to emphasize important ideas.

Include comments in your own words to make your notes more meaningful and helpful.

Pencil must be used! Any notes not taken in pencil will be graded for ½ credit.

Be neat! Any notes not legible will result with a zero.

Absenteeism

Attendance is very important. If students are absent from class, it is their responsibility to get all the materials missed. Make sure to copy the notes missed from a friend or Ms. Hartman‘s notebook so that all notes are present for notebook quizzes.

With an excused absence, students will be allowed the amount of excused time for making up assigned work. For example, if a student is absent for one day, they will have one day to make up the missed work. In addition, it is important not to fall behind on current work.

Assignments may also be made up for an unexcused absence, truancy, and suspension. No credit will be given, however it is not considered a missing assignment.

Behavior

Faculty automatically expects mature behavior from 8th grade students. They are role models for the younger students in the building and are preparing for high school. The following guidelines are assumed and enforced:

-All expectations discussed earlier are to be followed.

-There will be no eating without permission during class. You may bring in a bottle of water to drink in class.

-Do not write or scribble on your desks. Students will respect all property of the school.

-Be respectful and courteous to any other adult in charge.

-The use of cell phones, iPods, or other non-educational electronic devices are prohibited in class.

If a substitute teacher is present, students must remain on their best behavior. If the substitute writes down a student’s name with ANY complaints, that student will be automatically given a detention.

After-school detentions must be served when scheduled. If a student fails to attend a detention, a greater discipline will be handled by the office. (usually a Wednesday school)

Grades

Student’s grade in this class will be based on points earned from homework assignments, quizzes, tests, notebooks, class participation, and any other assignments that are necessary.

Work will be evaluated and graded as follows:

A = 90% - 100%

B = 80% - 89%

C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

Rewards

Any student who completes and turns in an assignment before the bell rings will receive 2 extra points for the assignment.

Any student passing every quarter with an A will be exempt from taking the final exam.

Every homework pass that is not used will be worth 5 points towards the final exam or the 4th quarter grade at the end of the year.

If all students are present on a quiz, notebook quiz, or test day, every student will be rewarded 2 extra points on the quiz/test.

1)First Offense: verbal warning

2)Second Offense: student/teacher conference and/or lunch detention
