Referral Guide for Bariatric Surgery – Plymouth Patients only

Referrals for bariatric surgery can only be made by the Weight Management Team.

The criteria for referral for surgery are the same as those for the weight management team and are listed below:

Referral criteria

The patient must:

·  be registered with a Plymouth GP

·  have a BMI of >40 with no co morbidities, or

·  have a BMI of >35 with obesity related co morbidities

·  attend the Weight Management Programme first, who will select the most suitable candidates for the surgical treatment

Providers of Bariatric Surgery:

·  Derriford Hospital is now doing gastric band and gastric bypass procedures

·  Musgrove Park,Taunton – only more complex cases are referred to Taunton, e.g. BMI>60, revision procedures.

·  as with other surgery, patients can also opt to be treated at any other designated centre if they wish.

The decision as to which procedure to choose is made jointly between the patient and on advice from the Weight Management Team.
