The University of Iowa department of Facilities Management is seeking a highly motivated person to coordinate campus-wide recycling and help lead the campus efforts in meeting ambitious waste diversion goals for its strategic 2020 Vision.The successful candidate will have a strong technical knowledge of recycling operations and help foster a culture oriented to reducing waste, increasing recycling, facilitating composting of organic waste, and enhancing green purchasing practices to achieve our goal of a 60% waste diversion by 2020.

Duties and responsibilities will include help educate the campus on Single Stream recycling; coordinate stakeholders interests in waste reduction and recycling; Conduct program updates with building coordinator and departmental meetings; Coordinate waste audits by college or building in order to engage departments, faculty, staff and students in waste reduction activities and awareness; Work with colleges to develop ownership of waste reduction and recycling strategies; Work closely with Office of Sustainability (OS) and FM Operations to align service responses; Focuses majority of time on areas of significant impact in diversion and capture rates; Continuously monitor waste reduction and recycling performance by building or department; Work with stakeholders to develop improvement plans, procuring resources and consultation services; Suggest ways to record and improve data collection on capture rates and waste diversion; Identifies campus and industry trends in waste reduction, recycling and composting in order to modify service responses and create new strategies; Provides consultation to FM Building & Landscape Services and OS on waste reduction, recycling improvement, diversion, operations and safe handling and transportation strategies; Prepares collection, capture and financial reports related to recycling and waste reduction for use by administration, OS and colleges.

The successful candidate will serve on local, county and state solid waste and recycling committees, associations and boards to stay abreast with best practices and help create strategic direction and legislations aimed at improving waste reductions, recycling and environmental impacts of landfill waste and serves as member of campus waste reduction and recycling advisory committee.

Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in related discipline and 1-3 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Experience with recycling and/or waste management processes and methods; Good written and verbal communication skills

Desired qualifications: Experience with single stream recycling programs; University experience

Salary range $36,000- $58,240commensurate with experience and qualifications.
