Role Overview:
The CSIRO Communication team works in an agency model where Communication Advisors work closely with Communication Managers on high profile campaigns and projects and apply their skills across a range of accounts to help share CSIRO’s work with the community, industry and government.
The Communication Advisor, Social Media will plan and implement the delivery of CSIRO’s stories across a wide array of social media and communication platforms.The role bridges technical and content areas and requires a combination of strategic and creative thinking. The role also requires a high level of engagement with the broader CSIRO community in the provision of advice and training.
As a Communication Advisor in an agency model, you will also have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills across a range of activities including developing strategies, writing articles, pitching stories, reaching new audiences, liaising with the media, preparing collateral, coordinating multimedia, evaluating campaigns, and marketing CSIRO’s science. You will play a critical role in helping CSIRO achieve path to impact by building strong relationships with scientists, business development staff and other stakeholders.
Duties and Key Result Areas:
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to formulate engaging and exciting content for social platforms that support our strategy, grow awareness of the benefits of our science and the wonder of scientific discovery.
  • Where required, lead small project teams to deliver campaigns, influencing and negotiating with stakeholders to deliver impact.
  • Deliver planned communication activities in a flexible, adaptive and responsive way.
  • Deliver effective communication outcomes using sound judgment and applying contemporary communication skills.
  • Seek opportunities to share knowledge and lessons within and across teams in order to develop a multi skilled communication team where individuals have more than one area of domain knowledge.
  • Strive for “Zero Harm” (physical and psychological) - promote a strong safety culture through active management of HSE performance.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives and (where relevant), establish networks with other teams and professionals.Allocate activities, direct tasks and manage resources to meet objectives.
  • Provide coaching and on-the-job training to fellow staff members, and provide recognition and acknowledgement for staff achievements.
  • Generate improved solutions in work situations, trying creative ways to deal with problems and opportunities.

Selection Criteria:

Pre-Requisites:
  1. Education/Qualifications: A tertiary qualification in a relevant area, such as Communication and/or relevant work experience.
  2. Communication: The ability to clearly convey information and ideas, adapted to others needs and priorities, and establish effective interpersonal relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Collaboration and Teamwork: The ability to work effectively in a team environment, proactively collaborating, consulting and sharing resources and knowledge to accomplish objectives.
Essential Criteria:
  1. Demonstrated experience and understanding in working with traditional and emerging social media channels in a creative way.
  2. Proven experience developing and delivering numerous successful, high profile communication projects and evaluating and reporting on the results.
  3. Extensive experience translating complex information into simple messages tailored for diverse audiences.
  4. Proven ability to understand a client’s needs and strategy, and identify opportunities and prioritise competing demands to deliver results for them.
  5. Initiative and flexibility to contribute to a variety of communication specialisations and across several areas within the wider communications function.
