Recruitment & Monitoring Support Worker – E1 Active

This position is based at: Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London E1 6LS (nearest tube: Aldgate East)

Role description
Toynbee Hall is currently looking for a volunteer to assist in the planning of E1 Active 2014. E1 Active is our annual summer programme offering outdoor activities to 10-11 year olds in Primary Schools in Tower Hamlets.
The support worker will be a key member of the team assisting in the recruitment, vetting and training of up to 40 volunteers as well as supporting creation of project materials and supporting communication with schools and parents. There will also be an opportunity to support creating a robust monitoring and evaluation system plus explore new avenues for volunteer training and development.
E1 Active aims to encourage children of primary school age to take up new and challenging outdoor pursuits, building confidence and friendship along the way. A respect for the outdoors and each other is instilled by inspirational teenage role models from Toynbee Hall who volunteer for the week and support the young people as they move from primary to secondary education. It is Toynbee Hall’s longest running project for young people and has enabled over 10,000 children in a 20 year period to spend time out of their normal urban environment experiencing the great outdoors!
This year E1 Active took place over a week this summer with over 250 children from Tower Hamlets travelling to Thriftwood Park in Essex to take part in a wide range of activities including rafting, archery and rock climbing. Here they were able meet new friends, spend time around positive role models from their local community and prepare for their transition to secondary school.
Another aim of E1 Active is to empower teenage volunteers to become inspirational role models and lead the project having received full training from Toynbee Hall. Over 37 volunteers primarily aged 16-25 had an important role of guiding and motivating the young participants through their experience. They camped for the week and experienced living as part of a community, each taking on new roles and responsibilities each day.
E1 Active develops the leadership and motivational skills of our volunteers. They gain valuable experience of working with young people in a fun and meaningful way as well as working in a team and taking responsibility. Volunteers received valuable training on safeguarding, dealing with challenging behaviour and basic facilitation skills. There was also a follow up session in one of the schools that we worked with during the week at a later date in July to consolidate what was learnt during residential week.
You will play a vital role in recruiting volunteers to the project and supporting the development and monitoring of the impact of the work we do with young people.
