The conditional offer of appointment

HR will confirm the conditional offer to the preferred candidate in writing as soon as possible after a verbal offer has been made.

All offers of appointment are conditional upon satisfactory pre-employment checks:

  • References (Senior Management/Academic/Support x 2; Readers x 3; Professorial x 5) including one from the individual’s current employer
  • SatisfactoryDisclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (if applicable)
  • Health clearance
  • Proof of qualifications
  • Proof of eligibility to work within the UK, or a Certificate of Sponsorship from the UK Border & Immigration Agency applied for through the University

Contacting the successful candidate

Professional services appointments:

For professional services appointments below senior level, the Chair of the panel will make a recommendation to appoint and the Chair of the panel, or another member of the interview panel as nominated by the Chair, will contact the preferred candidate and advise that a conditional offer will be made.

Academic, professorial andsenior appointments:

The Chair of the panel will recommend the appointment of the preferred candidate and will seek the authorisation of the PVC-dean or Director for all posts.The Chair of the panel (or a nominated Deputy) will verbally advise the preferred candidate that they are recommending their appointment and a conditional offer of appointment can only be made after the recommendation to appoint has been approved.

For senior posts (including professors) please forward completed forms to the relevant HR Partner for salary recommendations who will then escalate to either the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of POD or the Deputy Director of POD for approval.

For academic appointments, the Chair of the panel should indicate whether it is appropriate to recommend the candidate undertakes the PG Cert HE. See further information about the PG Cert HE.
