Reading Scholarship for HorseshoeBendHigh School - January 2008

This scholarship is awarded for the reading of 100 books from the school’s scholarship list and completion of each book’s appropriate test/discussion during the 7th-12th grade years at school. At the end of 12th grade any student, starting with the class of 2013, having successfully completed the above requirement will receive a reading scholarship in the amount of $100. For the graduating classes of 2009-2012 the following number of books will be required for the named scholarship amount:

2009: 20 books for a $20.00 scholarship

2010: 40 books for a $40.00 scholarship

2011: 60 books for a $60.00 scholarship

2012: 80 books for an $80.00 scholarship

The purpose of reading from this selection on books is to give students a diversity of reading experiences.

The reading list is a compilation of books from numerous college-bound reading lists, various United States High Schools summer reading lists, and selections from area teachers. There are many more than 100 books, giving students a variety from which to select as well as an opportunity to read materials from a variety of time periods, genres, and authors.

Most books will have AR tests, or some computer test, which the student can take and must pass with an 80% in order for the book to count toward the scholarship. Other books will require a discussion with the listed teacher.

Reading may occur anytime during the year from the first day of seventh grade until two weeks before graduation in 12th grade. This results in roughly 16.5 books annually for the class of 2013 and 20 books for classes prior to this date.

Students may chose to read a book by an author shown on the list, but the particular book is not. They will need to complete the “Student Reading Petition” form and present it to the “Reading Scholarship” Committee – Junior High and High School Language Arts Teachers, High School Media Specialist, and the Principal or their representative. The committee needs to make the decision since the book may or may not have an AR test. If not a teacher will need to be able to do the “student discussion” so the student can get credit for the title read.

New material will be added to the scholarship list over the years and some may be removed. If a student has read and completed tests for a book that is removed form the list, that student shall receive credit for the material read.

Each student will have a reading scholarship record sheet where titles and completion dates of AR tests and /or student discussions will be signed off by the discussing teacher or committee representative. These will be kept on file in the high school library or a central location.

Currently the scholarship fund will receive $1000 annually. Monies not used one year should be held in case additional funds are needed in any year so all who qualify receive the scholarship. If additional funding is found for the scholarship, the size of the scholarships could be increased by vote of the committee.

The “Reading Scholarship” Committee will meet annually to add/delete materials from the list and to check progress of the program so needs can be addressed and changes made in a timely manner.

STUDENT READING PETITION

(For use during the school year NO petitions during summer months)

In order to read a book not on the “HSB Reading Scholarship List” you will need to complete this form. If the book is by an author whose works are represented on the list (just not the book you might be interested in) you will have a better chance of the petition being successful. However, if you think a book is worthy of being read for this scholarship, complete this form and present it to a member of the “Reading Scholarship Committee” – High School or Junior High Language Arts teacher, High School Media Specialist, or High School Principal.

The committee will review your request and give you a verbal or written response within 2 weeks (during school year).
