Summer 2013

Footballing future looks brightfor Marshfield

In what has been an amazingly successful summer term for sport at Marshfield, our fantastic footballers signed off for the season with one final tournament victory.

With the Year 6's busily putting the finishing touches to their leavers show, we entered a team of Year 5's in the Year 5/6 competition on the astroturf. With Mr Moylan on mangerial duties, our side performed heroically throughout the dayand all but one of their opposing sides were made up of bigger and more experienced Year 6 children. Nonetheless, they rose to their challenge and picked up a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Glasllwch in their final game, courtesy of a good finish from Josh. This outing was excellent preparation for next season and we go into that in September with confidence.

Well done to the side, made up of:

Owen (c), Morgan, Jack, Shaun, Josh, Harry, Freya, James and Daniel

With a wealth of players making up the Year 4 football club this year, we were able to enter two sides in the Year 3/4 event, with many children pulling on the Marshfield shirt for the very first time. Our teams were separated into two groups and both sides impressed. We took full advantage of the rolling subs rule in the sweltering heat, so all 19 players got plenty of match time. One of our sides topped their group, meaning they progressed to the final where they met a Pentrepoeth side who won the other group. Danny blazed in the winner, meaning they ended up as the tournament winners!

Well done to all of the Year 4 children who featured and it won't be long before they are featuring in matches and tournaments again. Teams:

Louis (c), James, Jack, Sam, Owen, Danny, Elliot, Mia, Leo

Harrison L (c), Joe, Rico, Ollie, Ethan, Samuel, Taran, Morgan, Harrison F, Alfie

Many thanks to the parents who kindly provided the lifts to transport 28 children all the way to Rogerstone and cheer us on to victory:

Mrs Morgans, Mrs Burford, Mrs Peard, Mrs Tutton, Mrs Fretwell, Mrs Price, Mr Leworthy, Mrs Quilter, Mrs Bishop and a special thank you to Mr Thomas and Harrison F's big brofortheir coaching duties when we had two sides playing at the same time!

Green Flag Gathered (again!)

Marshfield retain Swimming Crown

We took along three squads to this year's Newport Schools Swimming Gala (only us and Pentrepoeth entered so many squads), totalling a massive 35 children swimming for Marshfield. Having won the trophy twelve months ago, it was difficult having to hand it back, although it turned out to be for only a few hours!

There were a total of 19 teams, representing schools from across Newport. Eight exciting races for each squadfilled the next few hours in the pool, with a short break for lunch and 'Aqua Blast' midway through proceedings. Events included standard relays of freestyle, backstroke and breastroke, plus some more 'exotic' events such as the ball relay, the (frustrating!) woggle relay and the t-shirt relay, in which each swimmer had to swap the t-shirt with the next team member before swimming their length!

Having entered the three squads, the action came thick and fast for Marshfield as we had one side in each heat. Each of three teams impressed and at the end of the races, we had a nervous wait to find out how we'd done, as each team received their certificates from an Olympic swimmer decorated with medals.

When the results finally came in, our section of the gallery erupted as we had indeed won the giant golden trophy again, for the second year running! It was the particularly strong'Marshfield Mohawks' side that racked up enough points to win the gala, but it was very much a whole team effort as they were ably supported - both inside and outside of the pool -by the equally impressive Marshfield Mayhem (a team made up of 11 Year 6s who had wanted the opportunity to swim in the gala before leaving us) and Marshfield Mavericks (a young side containing seven Year 5 children and five from Year 4, boding extremely well for the future).

A huge thank you to the support of many parents, both at poolside with their very vocal support and in volunteering enough lifts to get 35 children to the pool: Mrs Burford, Mrs Turner, Mrs Atkinson, Mrs Evans, Mr Beuchels, Mrs Powell, Mrs Bridge, Mrs Harvey, and Mrs Turner.

And, of course, one final massive thank you to Miss Davies for assisting with the children on the hectic day. She was approached by several swimming scouts on the day for her impressive t-shirt swapping technique!

Here are each team receiving their certificates, with each squad member listed:

'MARSHFIELD MAVERICKS'

Alex, Sophia, Ryan, Mia, Amy, Neve, Mark, Megan, Matthew A, Brooke, Eleri, Isabelle

'MARSHFIELD MAYHEM'

Erin L, Rhiannon, Morgan, Gemma, Anna, Kate, Ella, Maia, Callum, Erin B, Matthew

'MARSHFIELD MOHAWKS'

Matthew T, Morgana, Hannah, Noah, Fin, Ollie, Laura, Amy, Euan, David, Imogen, Catrin

A sensational and sunny Sports Day!

We enjoyed our first Sports Day in a couple of years (thanks, weather!) and the break had given Mrs Lawrence-Dent the opportunity to revamp our annual event. The children have been in their Houses for nearly two years now, collecting House Points towards a weekly whold school total for their team. This team spirit and sense of community was extended to our Sports Day competition this year.

Practising in classes in the week before the big day, the children were given the chance to get a feel for the events and have some input into what they would like to take in on the day. Each child competed in at least three events, some individual and some as in teams. Exciting events included the flat sprint, the egg and spoon race, football dribbling, skipping, the bean bag pick-up, the space hopper, the over/under race and the cross country, which all children took part in if they chose to.

The sports were extremely well supported, with the Foundation Phase children setting the tone in the morning and Key Stage 2 concluding the day in the afternoon. Many families enjoyed a picnic on the school field at lunchtime and some parents even had the chance to take to the track!

It was a lovely day and it was great to see the children supporting each other throughout. Here are the results of the House competition:

Foundation Phase winners: Yellow House

Key Stage 2 winners: Red House

Overall winners: Yellow House (by a single point!)

Another successful cricket season draws to a close

Cricket tournaments came thick and fastfor Marshfield at the end of the summer, owing to their tremendous success.

The boys' team (which actually included a numbers of girls!) had progressed through two stages - the Newport and then the South East Wales events - to reach the national Wales finals at St Fagans Cricket Club, Cardiff.

The standard was bound to be high here and unfortunately we were missing three influential players on the day, in Morgan, Lewis and Nathan, all of whom had played a key part in getting us this far. Nonetheless, we went agonisingly close to progressing to the very final stage for the whole of the UK, being held at Edgbaston.

Each of our four pool matches went to the final over, with three of them still in the balance when the very last ball was being bowled. We were unfortunate to lose one game by just 3 runs, another by 1 run and tie our last pool game!
