New Website!! The week’s Weekly News and the week’s spelling words will be posted on our new class website. To access the site, go to Birmingham City Schools – Schools-Sun Valley-Teacher-mrs. van Os.

Also posted on the site is a list of the “Fry Words.” The First 100 Fry Words are the 100 words seen most frequently in first grade texts. If your child needs to work on reading fluency, please go to the site and help your child learn the first 100 words. The Second 100 Words (seen most often in second grade texts) are also posted. For those who want to get ahead, the Third 100 Words are also posted. Scroll past the lists to the cards. They’re more fun to study!! 

Reading: Our story this week is “Life Cycle of a Pumpkin,” Unit 4, Story 2.

Skills: Context Clues, fact and Opinion, Asking Questions

Language: More Adjectives – Using adjectives for number, size and shape

Spelling: Our words are on the back of this sheet. Phonics: short oo sound as in push and hook

Math: We will continue in Chapter 5, practicing 2-digit subtraction with regrouping.

We will have our nines facts test on Tue. Please work with your child at home on learning all the facts. Thanks!!

Social Studies – Our Famous Black American Projects were due today. *** We have some terrific projects! Thanks so much for your support at home!!!!! Since February is Black History Month, we will continue to focus on Famous Black Americans as we present our projects in class and study addition people who have made significant contributions.

Science – Matter – We will be studying about the characteristics of the different states of matter - solid, liquid and gas. We will describe matter according to physical properties and we will describe changes in the states of matter.

Signing Agendas and Reading Logs: Please sign your child’s Agenda and look over their homework each

night. Our communication and the successful completion of the night’s homework are essential for your

child’s success this year. Thanks!

*** All projects need to be completed turned by Wednesday. If your child has not turned in a project or has only turned in part of the project, there is a note in your child’s Agenda.
