  • Essential Question: How does summarizing the plot, setting and characterization of the text; questioning the main ideas; paying close attention to word choice, and making connections to people and events beyond the text contribute to an in-depth analysis of a work of literature?
  • Vocabulary of the day: WTM list #2: anonymous, cantankerous, console, flail, malevolent, manna, reassurance, skeptical, slather; WTM list #3: besiege, careen, chaotic, crucial, miscellaneous, optimistic, pious, vaporize; WTM list #4: dissuade, infinitely, mill, ogle, quizzical, roster
  • Today’s tasks:

1)Everyone uses the back of your “Note-taking Graphic Organizer” for last week. Everyone takes notes while others are presenting. (1 min.)

2)Discussion: (30 minutes)

A)Reporters begin day’s discussion with a summary of the plot, setting and character development. Allow time for students to take notes and for responses from other group members to details and events the Reporter glosses over.

B)Diction Detectives report on words and phrases unique to the story that caused them to respond. Group members offer their own examples and write notes.

C)Bridge Builders make connections to their own experiences, other texts, and the larger world. Discuss the forms of conflict, and cite examples from the text. Take notes.

D)Discussion Leaders pose insightful questions that address the major issues, plot changes and character development. Group members pose their own questions for discussion. Leader makes sure that all voices are heard and questions addressed. Finishnote writing.

3)Discussion Leaders fill out “Group Meeting Reflection Sheet” while taking suggestions about how your Literature Circle could be better and more productive. (5 min.)

4)Put your “Group Meeting Reflection Sheet” on top of your completed role sheets. Pick out your new role sheet (NOT one you have already done!) Retain “Notetaking Organizer” and Vocabulary Webs for study purposes. (2 min.)

5)Whole class reflection. (3 min.)
