General Volunteer Information for the Homeless Resource Day-March 1, 2014

Thank you so much for your heart of compassion and willingness to help serve people in the community who are experiencing homelessness or are on the verge of homelessness! We trust that you will find your volunteer experience enriching and worthwhile.

The official timeframe for the event on March 1st is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteer duties begin a half hour before and last a half hour after the event. You may sign up for more than one shift of volunteering or volunteer for the full day. You will be provided a T-Shirt to wear that day so that you are easily recognized. Specific volunteer job training will be provided depending on the job for which you volunteered. You cannot volunteer unless the above application is completed and turned in by February 17, 2014. You may submit completed registrations to:

  • Brooklyn Needy at or fax to240-420-2188
  • Carrie Tressler at or fax to 240-500-3111

You may also drop it off or mail it toTurning Point of Washington County at 328 N. Potomac St, (PO BOX 419) Hagerstown, MD 21741.

All volunteers for the day of the event must be 18 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in Washington County Public Schools. Students may earn SSL hours by volunteering on Friday February 28th(4:30-6:30) for the event set up or on Saturday March 1st after 3:00pm for tear down and clean up. We cannot make exceptions to this policy.

Child care is not provided the day of the event so please make arrangements for your children if you are volunteering. There is no alternate date for this event, it will be held despite inclement weather. Please call your leader if you cannot make your scheduled volunteer shift as soon as you know.

Since the event is being held downtown, parking is at a premium. We have arranged for volunteer parking to be at Washington Co. DSS employee parking on Church Street beside the Market Liquor Store and in undesignated parking spots on the Market lot across from the DSS employee parking lot. Please do not park in any other location. There will be a shuttle provided from this lot.

Volunteer Job Descriptions:

Set up volunteer-This is open to students age 13 and older and any adults. It will occur on Friday February 28th from 4:30pm to 6:30 pm. You will be asked to set up tables and chairs over 3 floors of the Turning Point Building. You will also place signage in the appropriate places and other duties assigned by your leader. Please meet at the Turning Point building by 4:30pm on Friday February 28thfor instructions. A dinner of pizza and soda will be served for all set up volunteers.

Clean up volunteer-Clean up for the event will begin around 3pm on March 1st. Please be sensitive to people who are still working with agencies and service providers, don’t make them feel rushed to finish their work. Clean up will include taking out trash, sweeping, mopping, removing signage, picking up trash on the Aspiring to Serve grounds, breaking down tables and chairs and moving them back to original locations or loading in vehicles. You should report to the registration area at the main entrance to the Turning Point building (328 N. Potomac St) by 2:45pm.

Greeter/Registration Volunteer-Greeters should be friendly outgoing people. Your job will be to greet each person or family as they come to the event and direct them to intake/registration. You will also act as a general building guide as people ask where to find things and general facility related questions: i.e. where are the bathrooms? Where do we eat? Etc. Registration volunteers will either be registering guests as they enter the building or registering volunteers as they arrive for their shifts.

One on One Guides-One on one guides should plan to be at the event from 8:30am-3pm as it may take that long for the person or family you are serving to make it to each service provider they need to see. If your assigned individual or family leaves after several hours you may return to the intake location to receive another assignment. One on one guides should be able to demonstrate knowledge of community services and be culturally sensitive. One on one guides will be responsible for doing an intake assessment on the individual or family who comes to the event. Therefore, they should be experienced in interviewing people seeking services. One on guides will also be responsible for helping the person they are assigned to complete an exit survey.. We need approximately 150 volunteers to fulfill this duty. You will be provided a detailed training that you must attend if volunteering this event for the first time. Returning one-on-one volunteers do not need to attend the full training again but are encouraged to use these opportunities to observe the layout of the new venue. These trainings are scheduled for:

Feb. 18th 3-4:30 pm

Feb 25th6-7:30 pm

Feb 26th3-4:30 pm

Resource Bag Volunteers/Check Out-Resource bag volunteers will hand out the bags to participants after they have completed the exit survey. You will receive the ticket given to the participant at the end of the survey. Please do not distribute a bag unless a ticket is given to you. There is also a small amount of work that needs to happen for the gift cards and bus vouchers to be handed out. Strong attention to detail is a very helpful skill for these volunteers.

Parking and Traffic Flow-This volunteer will help direct parking and transportation the day of the event. In the event of snow or inclement weather they will also help keep sidewalks clear.

**You will be contacted in the week before the event with your group lead’s contact information and any additional details that may be relevant to position.

Thank you in advance for your participation!
