Arrival by Plane

ViennaInternationalAirport (VIE)

ViennaInternationalAirport (Wien-Schwechat) is located 30 kilometres to the south-east of the city. The airport is destination of direct flights from most cities in Europe and many cities in the world.

There are some possibilities for getting from the airport to the city:

  • S-Bahn (Suburban Train):The suburban train, operated by AustrianFederal Railways (ÖBB), is a direct train connection from the airport to the city of Vienna. The line from the airport to the city is the S2 line, the line to the airport is the S7line, and they operate in a 30 minute interval between 5am and 10.30pm.
    The suburban train is the cheapest way to travel to the city: You need a 2 zone-ticket (€ 3.40) for a ride to the city, with which you are allowed to transfer to any public transport line.
  • CityAirport Train: The City Airport Train (CAT) is a direct train link between the airport and Wien Mitte station, with a travel time of 16 minutes. The daily operation times are about between 5.30am and 11pm, with train departures every 30 minutes. A single ticket is € 8.-, a return ticket is € 15.-.
  • ViennaAirport Lines: This bus service connects the airport directly to the Südbahnhof (South train station) and theWestbahnhof (West train station). A single ticket is € 6.-, a return ticket is € 11.-.

From the airport to the University of Vienna: Take the S2 (directionWien Floridsdorf, Wolkersdorf, Laa a.d.Thaya, or Deutsch Wagram) or the CAT (directionWien Mitte), exit at Landstraße / Wien Mitte / City Air Terminal, take theU4 (directionHeiligenstadt) toSchottenring, then take U2 (directionKarlsplatz), exit at Schottentor.

  • Taxi: A taxi rank is situated directly at the arrival hall. The fare to the city is approx. € 35.-.

Airport Bratislava (BTS)

Airport Bratislava is an alternative to ViennaAirport, and there are regular bus connections between Bratislava Airport and Vienna.

Arrival by Train

Vienna has direct train connections to many European cities. International trains to Vienna arrive at the Westbahnhof or Südbahnhof.

The Westbahnhof (west train station) is the station for trains from the west (e.g. Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Basel, Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg) and the east (Budapest, Kosice, Bucuresti) and is connected to public transport linesU3, U6, 5, 6, 9, 18, 52, and 58.

The Südbahnhof (south train station) is terminal for trains from the south (Roma, Venezia, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Klagenfurt, Graz) and the north-east (Bratislava, Praha, Warszawa). Transfer to public transport lines U1 (via Südtiroler Platz), D, O, 18, 13A, and to the suburban railway service.

From Westbahnhof to the University of Vienna: Take the U3 (directionSimmering) to Volkstheater, then take the U2 (directionSchottenring), exit at Schottentor.

From Südbahnhof to theUniversity of Vienna: Take tram D (directionNußdorf), exit at Schottentor.

Directions to the University of Vienna

The University is located at the Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Ring, which is part of the Ringstraße and can be reached by the public transport linesU2, 1, 2, D, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, and 1A (exit at Schottentor).
