Context

The Red Cross is the largest voluntary humanitarian organisation in the world. It promotes humanitarian values and provides emergency help to people in short term crisis in the UK and overseas. Within the UK, the British Red Cross delivers services through its 50,000 volunteers and 3,000 staff.

Our success in making a difference to the communities in which we operate is dependent upon the quality, availability and delivery of aid to those in crisis. Teams comprising Senior Service Managers, Service Managers, Service Co-ordinators and volunteers deliver services.

Scope

The Red Cross helps vulnerable people in the UK regain their independence following personal crisis. Our Independent Living Services facilitate the transition to home from hospital for people in need of support in the community. The post holder will support delivery of a new service working across Exeter.

Overall Purpose of the Post

To co-ordinate a range of short-term independent living services across the location as appropriate, ensuring a high standard of service delivery, managing own workload and maintaining service delivery information in an accurate and timely manner.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Ø  To promote the service to external agencies and accept referrals from agreed and appropriate sources. To respond to and process referrals within agreed time specifications.

Ø  To help assess the needs of individual service users and ensure that services user feedback is gathered and acted on.

Ø  To plan, in conjunction with other agencies, appropriate care and support within the service criteria, ensuring the service user’s needs are met.

Ø  To recruit, motivate and engage volunteers.

Ø  To co-ordinate volunteer input with that provided by the service user’s family, friends, neighbours, Health and Social Care professionals or other appropriate agencies.

Ø  To receive reports from volunteers and act appropriately. This might involve signposting to other organisations and/or working in partnership with other Health & Social Care professionals.

Ø  To manage and monitor referrals and volunteers in an effective and efficient manner.

Ø  Publicise the services when time permits to ensure maximum awareness of the services provided.

Ø  Maintain appropriate records and files and compile statistical data as required.

Ø  Where necessary, assist volunteers in the delivery of the services.

Ø  Undertake any other relevant duties as requested by the Service Manager.

Ø  To have an awareness of and comply with all relevant Health and Safety Regulations.

Ø  Undertake all training required

Education/ Training

/   Educated to an appropriate level, GCSE or equivalent **

Experience

/   Previous experience in a health or social care setting would be an advantage
  Experience of working with and/or supporting service users, staff and volunteers again would be an advantage

Knowledge/ Technical Skills

/   IT literate**
  Customer care and practical application
  Knowledge of care services and ability to identify and assess people’s needs.

Competencies

/   Able to relate effectively to people of all types and at all levels both paid and unpaid. **
  Good oral and written communications skills**
  Ability to work in a pressurised environment
  Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team

Special Circumstances

/   Car driver with access to own vehicle and full driving license in order to visit service users, attend external meetings**
  Willingness to work flexible hours to ensure the service is staffed at all reasonable times, and to undertake other related duties as directed
  To undertake appropriate training courses
  Able to respond to any major regional emergency situations with 24 hour on call duties as required
